Flushing the cooling system

Hi,
I want to flush the cooling system and put new anti freeze in my Cherokee diesel.

Is this a straight forward drop the lowest hose on the rad or is there a better way to do this, Do I have to bleed the system?

and how much antifreeze do I need ?

any info would be handy

Did mine the other week. Hose off bottom of rad top hose off, back flush with hose pipe (not to much pressure) also disconnected heater matrix in /out hoses you will find them in out of bulkhead close to diesel filter and back flush with hose (not to much pressure) run water back up hoses the other way to flush block then fill back up with red coloured anti frieze or any one you prefer I put 3lts in some one will tell you the amount I am sure.
Remember when filling up do it very slowly just a trickle we don’t wont any air locks. Start up with cap off bottle let it run a bit (2min) turn off check level put cap on then drive it and check the level over next few days when cold and top up with antifreeze if necessary.

The diesel has a bleed screw for the radiator on the top driver side accessible through a hole in the slam panel.

the coolant should be a 50/50 mix now "winter" is on its way. with the bleed screw on the top of the radiator just make sure you screw it back into place as sometimes it can feel it's in place but it's not fully seated.
 either the std green/blue antifreeze is adequate or you can use the "oats" coolant (red/orange) in colour

Refering to this bleed screw on the radiator .......Is this actually a plastic thing that is about an inch ??..........and do you take it nearly out to bleed the system as it looks more like a black plastic valve not sure if I have to just turn it 90 deg :?

I am not bright but I can lift things :roll:

Yeah, 1/4 to 1/2 turn and it lifts up at the same time.

if the bleed screw hasn't been moved for some time it might be tight. There is an o ring that forms the seal which will hinder the turning by hand so some careful use of a set of pliers is needed. whatch how you turn and pull as you could pull it right out.
