Yet another snorkel question!

Ok, daft question time!
Which is the best way to face the air intake on the top of a Safari Snorkel? So far I’ve seen vehicles with it facing both ways (forwards / aft), and was just wondering if there was any advantage between the two directions?

From what I can remember, forward is advisable as the air being forced in pushes the rain to the surfaces inside the snorkel so it runs back down the outside of the snorkel via the channels and not into your air box, but I think in very dusty places facing aft stops the dust going in.

Hi Simon
Most people with gas single mixer conversions face it rearwards because otherwise it messes with the fuelling, also the other reason is to prevent excess dust being forced in.
So if it's dusty turn it backwards, otherwise forward as it should aid the loss of air flow due to the lengh of the intake.

yup the top should face forward unless in verry dusty conditions. by design the top uses the air flow to push rain out through the sides and down the outside rather than the inside.

In really dusty conditions you should have a pre-filter and keep it facing forwards but turning it around is quicker and cheaper option.

Also... if your 'froading anywhere really overgrown/scrubby its better to turn it backwards, as you are much less likely to damage the snorkel head, grill, etc - and as you'll be running at low speeds the ram-air effect isn't an issue.
