After the Jeepclub event at Tixover (wet and sandy), I had a flock of sparrows under my Jeep.

Despite greasing all the propshaft ujs and cv joints, I still get a squeak (very hard to pinpoint where it is coming from, apart from underneath).

The first time I grease the front cv joint, I got a lot of burnt smelling fluid out of the joint.  When I regreased today, only clean grease came out.

My next job will be to change the diff and transfer case fluids.

What else can I look at?  I could try and disconnect the front prop to try and isolate that.

How do I check axles, wheel ujs and bearings?

are you sure it's driveline related ?

have you tried rocking the vehicle when it's stationary, this should then check whether is suspension related

Could be the centre of the double cardan joint in the front prop (t/case end) try it with the prop removed and see if the noise goes away.

I'm with the Doc.
I had speed related squeak,
it was the front cardin joint.
took prop off soaked it with WD40 move it around in all plains you may find its tight in one direction.
WD40 may stop squeak but joint is lunched.

Looks like I will have to remove the front prop shaft    , just as it starts snowing!

I just hope I can refit it, since it is an awkward job.  The work is piling up (fuel tank skid, winch, rear bumper...)

I will have to wait for some warm and dry weather since I am only a fairweather mechanic and have to work with the Jeep on the road.

to recreate that "inside a workshop" feel, run your engine for 1/2 hour, then when lying fully under the Jeep to remove front prop you will be sheltered and warm

I find the ratchet spanners with the socket adapter good for the tight job of undoing the bolts by the transfer case.

I think it's 3/8 for propshaft bolts, metric will round them off if they are tight.

just had my mates transfer box off for repair i used  3/8 drive  8mm socket for propshafts ,  make shure the socket is well on before you crack them!......cya

hi ivan i doubt it is your front prop cos you just had it rebuilt didn't you? does the noise change or stop when you go round corners? it could be a dry uj somewhere else mate.

I tried to disconnect the front of the shaft, but it wouldn't move.  I presume the only way is to remove the shaft completely.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the double cardin joint, and plenty of grease seems to keep it quiet for a few miles

ivan if you can get yours down to us, i am sure if you ask manda nicely she will take it in for a service for ya. if the dc joint has failed already there is an issue with the rebuild which was not long ago.

Nearly all the bad feedback is from the same user, obviously out on a mission. The other bad feedback is for wrongly supplied parts, which happens all the time as part numbers are changed by the manufacturer, or the owner supplied incorrect details.
