my mate overheating cherry turbo diesel

any ideas on this guys and girls :lol:
hes hoping its not head gasket ,but its not losing any water /there is no signs off mayo in oil cap or oil in water
hes tried running without the thermostate but it still seams to be over heating ,its just getting to hot and boiling over in the expanition bottle
any body got any surgestions ?

thanks for a quick reply there mike
is there any way of testing it , before we strip it down
any advice at all would be good as i don`t know much about diesels , good with v8`s though

use a pressure tester on the water system. pump to about 1 bar or 1.5bar and the gauge shouldn't move. if you have a leak or a cracked head then the gauge will slowly lose pressure. there is a product on the market where you put a container over the water header tank and you then run the engine, the contents of the container will then change colour if there is a leak in the water cooling system. unfortunately i cant remember the name of it

Just run it with the cap off the header tank. If you get gas bubbles there's a leak of combustion gases into the cooling system from one of the heads. To narrow it down to the offending head, remove the top of the water rail along the right hand side of the heads, remove the serpentine belt to disable the water pumo and run the engine briefly. You should see the bubbles from the water outlet from the offending head or heads. When you remove the heads you will also find white residue on the leaking head(s) and corresponding piston.

never thought of diagnosing a head that way, pretty simple and cheap for starters.
