i believe that dave69 is attempting to establish if the clutch is beyond service life.........

This is a serious problem, affecting a large number of Jeeps, and has been linked with global warming. Many owners have also observed that presseing the accelerator results in the vehicle actually MOVING, which has been linked to an increase in mortality on Britains roads. For pity's sake, have your vehicle looked at!!!!!

No it is not hard to engage gear.The revs only increase when i accererate.John

Not sure about the TD's, but the 4L suffers from ware in the transfer selector linkage which manifests as a rattle at tick over.  Try lifting the 2WD/4WD lever just a touch and see if the rattle goes away.
Like I say, I'm not sure if it's this 'cos the TD has a differnt transfer case.

I have also noticed with this problem of when accelerating with revs rising that there is a guauge on the dash that moves rapidly from f to e? are these connected? or is it an entirely different problem?

Anectdotal evidence from the US suggests that the two may be in some way connected. Research continues, but official government guidance on the phenomena is to prevent the needle reaching 'E' by introducing a rather expensive substance known as 'petroleum' or 'gasoline' into the seemingly pointless hole marked 'fuel'. I'm personally skeptical of such claims. My own research proves that no matter how much fuel I put in the truck, it only ever gets back where it came from.

I've been instructed to write 'thrust bearing'.

Nope, that'd make a noise when the clutch pedal is pressed. Might just be the gearbox getting a bit rattly. Mine does it.

i find this more noticable when the wife drives the car, unless she is selling the petrol for a profit

With Mike and Chris, not thrust bearing, but could well be transfer leaver rattling, had to put sticky foam pads on mine coz it was driving me nuts.
