best locker

a bloke asked me yesters what was the best locker to fit i was stumped at first he said he used his xj for daily comute and family trips towing caravan his wife had got a small rice burnner but did drive it so he did not want to spoil handling
so i said trutrac front and rear for there performance and on road manners
i also said arbs if they were in his budget i did also recomend upgrading his rear shafts
i told him best thing he could was join all the jeep forums and ask there advise and go with the the majoraty

did i do rite as i have never had an xj i try not to voice to much about them

The thing is that an XJ that tows a caravan well is a stock XJ. With bigger boots on, but no re-gear, it would be hopeless at towing. Therefore, I wouldn't have thought lockers would be first thing on the shopping list.
Is it a stocker or does it have other mods?

If it's stock and he just wants extra tracton to get across feilds with his caravan, then trutrac in both ends, or ARB, OX type thing in the back should do the trick.

If the trucks got bigger tyres, then either of the above with a re-gear at the same time.

That should make it handle like a standard truck on the road and easiest to live with.

Personally, I'd go with a trutrac in the front and a Detroit soft locker in the back and live with the handling but that's just me. :D

Selectable locker(s) like ARB/OX have to be the obvious choice just because you can turn them on/off.

As said above if it's stock, towing and just wants a bit extra than just 1 truetrac in the rear would work pretty well.

Any automatic locker (Detroit, no-slip, lock-rite) in the rear will be noticeable to some extent and different people find the effects acceptable or not. I don't tow with mine so I don't know how the locker would feel, but I'm guessing it could be tricky at times.

If money isn't really an issue it would be selectable(s) and even a re-gear for better towing 'pull'.

I think you advised him right anyway Bubba, best to point people to do some research and make up their own mind.  :)

So if switchable lockers were too expensive would a soft locker be better in the rear than a truetrack if it wasnt for road handling... :smt102

they call em softlockers but they are far from that. the truetrax are vertualy un noticable on the street where the mechanical lockers are a differant story. i would say truetrax was the way to go for this.
