Sometimes I wonder....
97-2001 XJ Rear mounted Spare
«

Firstly, Hi everyone.
I have a stock 99 XJ to which I will be fitting BFG A/Ts (235/75/15) to this week.
I really want to get the spare out of the boot and on to the back. I'd rather not change the rear bumper if I can get away with it and wanted to know if the optional rear carrier for pre 97 XJs can be modded to fit.

It may be possible, but might be more trouble than it's worth as the bumper and tailgate are both a different shape on the earlier ones, so you might struggle to get the mounting hardware fitting nicely. Olympic do a rock bumper an swing out tire carrier at a good price. Have a look on Quadratec's site. The bumper is $239 and the swing out is $289 + $42.95 for the bracket which holds the wheel. I believe Steve at NSM has one of the bumpers in stock.

I didn't really want to change the bumper 'cos I know what would happen.
You know, new rear bumper means you HAVE to get a new front one. Then a winch. Now everything looks a bit silly if you don't do a lift, then the tyres look too small.........
Oh, what the hell!!

How different do you think the facelift model would be to the earlier model?? Reason being, I will be doing a stripdown & refit of a swing away on my '93 XJ soon (done a deal with UniformMovie) so i would be a in a position to take pix, measurements, etc............you are even welcome to come & help....
just a thought!!
