try measuring up a ford pinto as in early escorts from the 70's
They are compact and not high tech.
A series mini engine.
Can't see anything going in without rewelding mounts.

it's not just a case of slinging in any old car engine. as each engine has a different way of installation. modern cars have ecu and other electrical stuff which can get complicated. look at a simple non ecu and carb engine so when it breaks it can be a relatively cheaper fix. you will have to make your own/adapt engine mounts and gearbox mounts if any. you will have to aline the transmission as well so not a simple job unless your swapping for another engine exactly the same

have to agree whith mr p rebuild the original as its an m38a1 however ther used to be a pinto conversion for your gear box also there was one to fit the 215 cubic inch buick engine [aka rover v8 ] advance adapters still may do the buick plate but you would need to do some research to find the pinto plate may i ask why you are considering a swopped engine over an original do you show or offroad?

I was trying to find a way to get the Jeep fixed .
When its fixed i will use it for shows and off road, if possible every day .
The engine is starting to sound like a bucket of bolts and leeks lots of oil ,
gear box just leeks lots and lots of oil .
I would love to be able to rebuild the engine/gear box BUT i know
F*** all about fixing engines .
Does anyone know anyone who would be able to rebuild a M38A1 engine?
