my project
« on: September 02, 2007, 11:13:23 PM »

firstly i have to appologise as ill not be at cheap fest like i said, cos she aint finnished.
the build so far started off as J20 dana 44 front an 60 rear with custom shafts an ox lockers all sat under claytons 8inch long arm an rear coil conversion.
that changed when i bought a set of unimog 404 axles

the befor pics- 8inch lift, 33's, 4.10 geared.

to be honest there was nothing wrong with her as she sat besides needing long arms.
but anyway this is how she sits tonight, sorry for the pics being a bit dark but i only took them half hour ago.

i have more progress pics on my phone but not uploaded them onto the computer yet.

the rears only temporary!!!! if the front LA's work then ill do the same to the rear as ive made them up myself,
the shocks are 14inch 5150's all round an i didn't fancy turreting them into the boot (like my original plan) untill i know what im doing regarding coiling it!

its actually still sat on the 8 inch lift with the extra hight of the axles, ive also moved the front axle forward 4inches to help with the huge tyres ill be fitting!!!

the wheels in the pics are the original 20x 9's an tyres are 10.5x20 which stand about 38inches tall> :D

whats left on the todo list is-
front shock mounts,
brakes / disk conversion,
steering bars an hydro assist,
propshafts,
wheels an tyres.
the Dreaded MOT, TAX an INSURANCE.

unfortunately time has been a big problem otherwise it should of been done by now!!! :(

She looked good before!

Can't wait to see the finished job.  Shame about not being ready for Cheapfest though.

Awesome work! 8)

it will come out the garage!!!!

it will be on blocks of wood an winched out by my friend yj but it will come out!!!!
i was thinking of pulling it out on trolleys but there's no brakes an i didn't get any offers for cars (brakes) to be parked at the end of the drive to stop it hitting the wall on other side of the road!

old axles went a couple of months ago to south wales to someone off difflock.

as for a name she hasn't really ever had one besides being my little princess, since a friend stuck one of those little fome heads on her arial which was i little pink princess.

the hight is as it is because even with 8 inches the pinion an diff are still quite friendly with the sump an bell housing, ill get some close up pics posted later.

how do you mean? what do you recoment???

the final drive ration of the mogs is 7.56-1, so its pretty low.
im looking at running something like a 46inch tyre but calculations still say its gonna be very low geared.

Nice project  8)

404 axles are seriously strong things - they're designed to cope with the high compression M130 and M180 engines (anything up to 190hp) and should be fine with 46" tyres. I've got MPT's on my 404 that measure 41" and they're fine with the measly 80-odd horses.

You going to use speed-rated agri tyres??

Straightforward supplies will make beadlocking wheels for the 404 axles... They do a disc brake conversion too that uses disco s1 calipers/discs/pads.

Oh by the way, in answer to a question above about weight, a front 404 axle with the reduction drives and diff is about 320kg  :o

im trying to get in touch with straight forward at the moment to order the brakes. ive already got everything else off him (pinion conversion, high steer arms, hydro steer kit)

these are the wheels im after. looking at the lack of clearance on the portal hub im gonna stick with 20inch rims an probly 12 or 14 wide double beadlocks

Is the final drive of 7.56 including the hub reduction?

Shurely if your gonna run 46's then a 7.56 ratio aint going to be too overgeared if you know what I mean?

At least you will be able to use your high and low box.

http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm

found this an id have a guess the 46's will be in  /just out of the power range an ideal tyre to gearing would probly be a 49ish.

it'll be like 4.56 with say 31's

so what's the next project ?  a roof chop or a modification to the garage door. looks like it's a pain to take the tyres off just to get it into the garage
