Pinion shims
«

I am in the process of replacing my D30 pinon bearings as the outer one was shot. Anyway upon dismantling I discovered that there have been no shims at all used in its setup. Have removed the bearing races and there are none behind them either. On the pinion it is marked as +1 but is it possible that the setup could of been correct without any shims or is that just unheard of?

Factory setup uses a shim under the front (largest) bearing. Take care not to damage it when removing the race and re-use it.
They also use the slinger to shim the bearing out where one is fitted.
If you need to adjust the pinion depth you can leave the under head one out and adjust the depth with shims under the shell.
+1 means the pinion was manufactured at 1 thou over std depth setting as measured from the face of the pinion head to the ring gear centre.

There will be shims under the carrier bearings to set preload and backlash. I would replace the carrier bearings while it's out. False economy not to.
