xj wheel bearing

i wonder if anyone can help i have think the cherry needs new wheel bearings lot of play when the front end is jacked up. does anyone now how much these will cost and where i can get them local motorfactors or main dealer only.and is it easy enough to do.

if it the  front bearing there come as a hub like these

i think in right in saying this is a typical price and half that of dealer.

not to bad a job biggest problem is taking the crown nut of and seperating the drivshaft from the hub . Pullers would be and very big help

If you can wait a few weeks for delivery these are cheap...

I have just replaced both front hubs on myTJ, and found  used Stu Olsen's site avaluable source of info to do this.

Lessons I learned from doing this proceedure
I had to use an air  impact  wrench to get the hub nut loose    
I  forgot the heat shield when reinstalling,  
Then I put in on backwards
then installed it with the gap in the wrong spot By then  I  was becoming proficient, so the otherside went onwithout a problem

hope it helps,its a relativly painless proceedure.

Yes i think it was just after xmas, they said 7 to 10 days delivery but IIRC it was more like 14 to 18 days..

I know others have had them too but had to wait a little longer than me..

Fitted and working ok... 8)

wow i didnt think they would be that expensive is there no way of rebuilding the bearing. if not i'll have to order from the states for less than half the price

the hub is kind'a part of the bearing

Yeah full hub unit like the one posted above on the ebay link :)

Ive had to do both of mine in the last couple of months, got mine from lighthouse nearly £150 each + VAT, would have been similar price from local motor factors and nearly double that from the stealership :(

Dead easy to replace though i did mine myself and im a little girly with a huge spanner  a chissel and a BFH :lol:

gave my old ones to a mate with a press to see if they could be taken apart to get the bearings out see if we could recon the old ones. no chance though so im afraid its big bucks every time  :?

Hmmmm, so do wheel spacers shorten the life of the bearings on standard wheels?..........

well when i put my spacers on a few people told me they were bad for wheel bearings - but i left the spacers on - like ya do.

a year of spacers later both bearings totally cream crackered, now i dunno if this is coincidence or what.

My car really gets abused regularly in some pretty nasty conditions which are bad for bearings anyway (grit / sand water - quarry bashing you name it), so i dont think the spacers were totally to blame as i have gone through three sets of discs and pads in less than a year too.

I dunno how long the old bearings were on for all i know they could have been on there for the life of the car.

So i reckon its a mixure of the spacers and the way the car is used that buggered my bearings, needless to say i took the spacers off after i got my new bearings on (back to tyre chaffing now)  :?
