COOLANT SENSOR BAD

What sensor is this?is it the coolant level slider inside the header tank or the temp sensor in the thermostat?
The temp guage still works.ive unplugged the temp sensor off the thermostat and cleaned the connections and replaced it and now i've got CHECK ENGINE on the dash.
HELP COZ I'VE GOT A GALLON OF PETROL AND A ZIPPO AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Disconnect the battery to clear the fault code and see what happens.
