Remote fob
« on: December 12, 2007, 08:40:50 PM »

Hi again all,

Anybody know the best replacement for a 96 XJ cherry remote key fob?

I only got one when i bought it and the rubber/button is missing so that the actual switch on the pcb is exposed. It still works (just) but i don't want to be stuck without it

Allthe replacements on ebay seem to be two button models and i'm not sure of compatability.
Anyone replaced one of these? anything i should avoid?

ta in advance.

The answer to this is in here somewhere, but I'm buggered if I can find it. Use the search function above and you'll get it.

Edit:

You just have one button on your remote? Any chance of a picture?

Jeep stopped using single button fobs in 1992. Looks like as you suspect, you have a non-standard one. A dealer would probably only fit a Chrysler one. Mr. Pavelin would confirm that.

Go to a local alarm specialist, they may be able to clone the remote.

I have a one bottom fob on a 1995 Cherokee, Chrysler branded and fitted by dealer (got receipt in owners pack)  :?

But mine is different to the one with the problem

The original wedge shaped two button remote will work the central locking but won't operate the alarm system.

just to clarify, the fob i have above operates the central locking, the alarm and the immobiliser (which is a constant pain and times out after about 25-30 secs if you open the car and don't turn the ignition.

it has one button on it that both locks and unlocks the car.

As far as i can tell it sends to the little dome in the middle of the cab and their are two alarm sensors at the front of the jeep on either side of the windscreen.  I will take some pictures later and you guys can tell me if its a non standard system or just a non standard fob. I'm hoping the latter  :(

so Mike if i understand you correctly, if i were to replace mine with the two button lock/unlock type. i would still need the one i have to operate the alrm/immoboliser?

I was hoping for 20 quid off of eblag and some handy instructions...

The remote you have is for a retro fitted alarm system (either official Jeep UK or not) and is a radio remote. The vehicle was originally supplied with a two button infra red remote that usually goes missing if an aftermarket alarm is fitted. The dome in the roof console is indeed the infra red receiver but is redundant unless you have the original type remote. Both of the available alarm systems fitted by UK Jeep dealers were rebadged versions of propriotary aftermarket systems, but both are very old now and it is difficult to get replacement remotes for them. IIRC the single button version was called the TC-1 but don't quote me on that. You might get lucky and find that you can still get a replacement from Jeep, then you need to find a dealer who still knows how to program the system to accept it. Information on these systems is very scarce as it was a UK only thing and doesn't appear in any Jeep literature. Alternatively I believe some specialists can clone remotes by copying the signal from the existing remote onto another via a computer. Try these guys.... http://www.alarmremotes.co.uk/ Worst ways, take the thing out and get a modern system fitted or do without.

Yep, Mike is right (again), the system was called TC 1.

When I first got my XJ it had a single button fob with the name Sigma on it.

Managed to get a couple of genuine chrysler fobs of e-blag.

My local stealer programmed one for me.
