Front springs on 94 cherokee 4.0

Silly question probably, but when I changed my front springs on my 4l cherokee, I had a right nightmare as the tower that holds the bump stop seemed to have been welded into place! This meant that the springs were extremely difficult to get out and the new ones back in, with a lot of levering!
Is this normal? Is there an easier way to remove the springs as I want to fit some lift shims?

Hmm. Let's try to remember.....
Jack up body and axle, remove wheels, remove dampers, clamp springs, disconnect swaybar, lower the axle to the ground (with body still jacked up), voila.
(I bet I missed something, it's been a while)

they are a bit awkward unless you start dropping some of the steering components (track bar), you want to try fitting some springs that have 3 inch worth of extra steel on the coil, there even more pleasant, but hey it's all part of the fun

be carefull with some of the cheaper ones with the single peg style hooks as they can move if they clamps aren't positioned right

Yes the bumpstop towers/tubes are fixed and you will need to either jack the body right up and disconnect as much stuff like shocks as possible to remove springs. Using compressors makes it much easier but they aren't the quickest things to use.
If you jack the axle up (sway bar disconnected) at one end to compress the spring, clamp on the compressor and then lower the jack it saves a bit of cranking on the compressor by hand.
By about the third spring change it's a piece of cake, well kind of -
6" lift springs with serious lb rating (desert racing spec
) take an unbelievable amount of manouvering into place!!
