Winch issue.. urgent help needed

If someone was to disengage the spool on a winch and pull out @1.5 metres then engage it to allow for the vehicle to be towed what is the potential for damage to the winch or accelerated wear to it?

i think it may depend on the model of winch as to wether it was a worm driven drum or planetry damage i think would be aparent as soon as you tested it not working correctly or od noises the best thing to do would be ring one or two winch dealers and ask them ...........they arnt meant to be used as a tow strap but i think most would be robust enought to stand this kind of use/abuse

if i remember you bought an ep 9. if so you should be ok as it has brakes therefore taking the jolts from towing rather than the gears as bubba says. just give it a test and see. i would phone em anyway and tell em they are a shower of wankers for doing that in the first place. [-X
