« on: February 25, 2008, 09:00:32 PM »

Cant see what the problem is but ma jeep (xj) keeps pulling left slightly, enough to be a pain, tracking is ok and the brakes aint binding, anyone have any ideas as to the problem?

if the tracking is ok i.e  set to 0degrees then the reason it pulls to the left is the camber of the road, since the road has a slight curve to allow for the water to run off the jeep tends to pull to the left. this will be more obvious on older roads rather than newer ones.

the other option is your tyre pressure could be alot lower than the other.

Try checking your front tyre  pressure...........

Na! none of them... as soon as i pull away even really slowly it starts pulling left but I cant see any problem, calipers are sound, tyres pressures spot on even swapped the wheels around and still this annoying pull to the left, axle not binding, does it in 4x4 too! :werd:

Just put new springs on the back end a few days ago, no problems there and everything is secure, I have noticed that there is more wear on the n/s/f tyre the others are not worn like that one, and i swapped them all around but still the problem is there.

Where is the tyre worn?

Outer OR inner edge = tracking (or roundabouts too fast)
outer AND inner = low pressure,
centre of tread = too much pressure.

The tyre is worn on the outer edge, but only that n/s/f tyre.

Actually, perhaps someone can answer this. My XJ also pull eft, though the tracking is fine now. Does the steering box not have a central 'at rest' position that it always tries to maintain? If so, that would explain why mine, and maybe why dmw's both pull left in the absence of any other obvious faults. Drag link adjustment needed perhaps?

They all do it to a certain extent. ZGs were the worst. Jeeps with solid front axle will tend to follow road camber (to the left over here) Drive up the right hand side of the road and you'll find it drifts to the right.

May have found the cause with the pulling left, well its not helping anyways ... ma jeep at some stage has had an almighty whomp up the offside arse end.
I noticed a slight crease in the rear offside wheel arch yonks ago so today i decided to investigate as i had to weld the floor back there.
After burning away all the crud and shite loads of underseal around the floor and chassis (just rear of axle right by fuel tank) I have discovered the chassis is bent slightly (creased in two places) right where the dog legs are and its pushed the floor up too! also the leaf spring shackle under full weight was almost touching the back of the jeep so everything has moved abit back there probably causing the pull or not helping it.
So i gotta remove the tank cut the chassis in a couple places, whang the floor back down while jacking the back end of the chassis up that will straighten it out mostly then I'll re weld and reinforce the chassis with some plate thats here somewhere, good job I can weld proper!!

Ripped off again!!
