rock rails for xjs
« on: February 29, 2008, 10:31:01 PM »

i have had the opertunaty of late to give xj rails/gards/bars whatever you want to call them some thought  and looking around there seems to be a few ways of doing them the mounting methods i find interesting in that quite a few seem to use the pinch seem on the sill as an aditional mounting point the main one is the main subrail now that may be fine but to me it seems pants from a strength point it may be ok for moderate trail stuff but to me the main reason for fitting would be to protect the jeep from damadge to the sills lower door area if so that would then imply they would be strong enough to suport an xj so an aside benifit would be the abillity to use a high lift jack on them but i cant help thinking the pinch mounting would buckell  the best mounting to me seems to be to just cut the sill out and weld box or large tube steel into it what have you lot fitted and how strong are they am looking at this the wrong way and got the wrong end of the stick help guys

with the type that pinch and bolt through the cills it also depends upon the intergrety of the cill and the chassis leg. If it is undamaged and not rusty then  it might be strong enough. Ideally the pinch seam in my opinion would need to be drastcally longer.
A full cill replacement with a strong box section would be better as it would improve the torsional strength of the xj body by a great deal. This pinch rock rails could then be added as an addition in the manner of a sacrificial part incorperating a high lift jacking point or even a step.
