Gearbox advice

How smooth is the transition between P,R,D on an autobox (never owned an auto before)? I've looked at 3 or 4 Cherokees now - all seem to rev up slightly as the gears engage - the cars also 'jerk' slightly, presumably as the torque converter loads up? Is this normal, or something that's typical for cars at 10years old / 100k?

Is it worth doing any immediate maintenance to prolong the life of the gearbox, or just let it run until the next service.

Cheers

Sounds fairly normal.

The AW4 is tough as old boots, so just wait until its next service.

Just check the levels when your looking at potential purchases.

I didn't and drove the XJ about 130 miles all in and discovered it was bone dry. 3 litres later and brown trousers when it wouldn't change!

Must be tough though as its fine now :)
