CB noob questions
« on: March 21, 2008, 02:02:46 PM »

Some questions for the CB elite among us......

1. On the CB unit I have it's rated at 13.2v....will it function ok on the GC      12v circuit?

2. I have a 'power mic' with tone and volume controls...any good? what does it do over a standard cb mic? Also this mic has a four pin connector that then attaches to another cable with the DIN connector on the end for attacheing to the unit. What are the standard names for these connectors so i can purchase the correct connectors for extending the cable. If i wanted to just use a standard mic what would be the difference and are they universal?

3. I'm guessing i just need cable (What coax type) mount and ariel. I'm going to buy a quick disconnect to remove the antenna when not in use. Is there any disadvantage to this signal wise?

4. Is it just a case of cable screw into unit, screw into mount, antenna screw into mount, tune antenna? I'm assuming that if the mount is grounded on the body of the vehicle thats ok?

lastly I have two cobra two way radios....would the frequencies these work on be able to communicate with the cb?

Any other useful tips greatfully received!

Cheers

I’ve been more than impressed with the service I’ve had from this C B Radio supplier near to where I live. There is a shop which is open 6 day a week and the owner has been selling CBs for as long as they have been around! He’s also race-prepares 4x4 Land Rover based vehicles.

There was a very nice gesture made by the owner and that was; if anyone has any CB related problems with their equipment, that he will try and answer the queries by email.

His details are as follows:

Roy Hart
C. B. Radio Shop
92 Lea Street
Kidderminster

the cb wont receive the radios you mentioned. a disconnect set up shouldn't affect your signal. dont expect amazing range from a cb cos it wont happen 8-)

Ok ok sorry, cant help it, bacon :prayer: was spotted and I went off on one, Oh the bacon banjo, STOP IT :smt075

The cb is rated above 12volt because the alternator charges above 12 volts, and the mic is powered because it probably has functions, ie channel up/down, may be wrong on that though.

The rest I dont know about, did get into cb's years ago but sold all my stuff but would like to get back into it again, been looking at this cb just of late...

http://www.kcb.co.uk/shop2/contents/media/TCB770.gif

Supposed to be quite good so when i get the time to go off roading or greenlaning then I can keep in touch for free.

Wish we could use the old AM sets though, much better for distance.

Thanks Greggmo, I've been told that you should get a few miles out of a decent setup.

Like the look of that CB unit you got your eye on DW. I picked one up cheap for my first...see how i'll get on with it. Whats that unit costing?

It's rated at 13.2v because that's what a '12v' battery actually is when charged to absolute maximum. Six cells at 2.2v each.

Its around £65.00 but I guess I'll be spending around £120.00 by the time I sort an antenna and cabling and swr meter out, Oh and maybe a little burner perhaps, get a little distance from on high somewhere, but keep that bit quiet, shhhh :-$

I recall I spent only around £75 - £80 for a brand new set-up which included the rig, antennal, cables etc. etc..... Give Roy a shout in Kidderminster or Google search for a local supplier.

If you spend £65 on what looks like a very old rig you just don't know what you're getting.

For the little extra, I'd go for brand new with instruction book and latest whip antenna etc!

Don't bother with a burner!

It might give you more range, but it won't help you receive someone you're burning out to a long way away!

From my experience you really only use your CB whilst green laning or whilst on play days and in reality, you only ever need to communicate with someone in your convoy or on the play site, so a one mile radius is the maximum you will ever need.

The small handheld PMR transceivers work on a completely different set of frequencies and will not work with a CB. They are handy to have though as sometimes when I go out laning, not everyone has a CB fitted and these small PMRs are great for chatting whilst in a convoy situation and I find you can always share them out assuming you have a pair or more!

Burner?????

Its a power amp!! generally cb's transmit at 4watts max, but a burner will boost the power significantly. Had one back in the early days when us was on the old AM sets

Its like grilling a small piece of bacon only downstairs will smell it, but fry a huge piece, the whole house maybe the neighbours will catch a wiff too!!
