2001 TJ 4.0 transfer case drive chain

Had a sound like a bag of spanners coming from the transfer case, dismantled it, chain seems very slack.
Is it possible for the chain to stretch?

I've just had the car re-geared and Trutracs fitted front and back, would the extra stress on the box have had an impact?

never seen it stretch on a wrangler................check your four wheel drive leaver is fully disengaging, this i have seen when the wrangler has a lift, sounds terminal when not adjusted correctly!

I've heard that sound a few times as people pull into events and select 4-lo. It's usually been caused by the two reasons listed above - chain stretch or the lever not aligned properly after fitting suspension or body lifts.

Yes it can stretch as it did on my YJ, new chain from Lighthouse and the old one side by side proved this, there is very little clearance between chain and case so tiny bit of stretch will be heard as ice in a blender.
Also if you have a locking device as I did or even a lsd in your front diff the front prop WILL turn even if transfer case is in 2wd. this will cause the chain to spin unloaded and you will eventually hear the ice in blender noise again also you WILL end up with a mullared front prop. How do I know???!!!!

Easily fixed.....money... free wheeling warn hub kit very excellent piece of kit, and or look for a Dana 300 and flip it, no chain just gears as it should be.     also excellent.

Maybe your right, but.....
Got a mate with a TJ same deal... Put a LSD in the front and Mullared his prop. transfer case is OK though!!!!!
