Could I?
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:25:37 PM »

I have this 93 4.0L Cherry with a procomp 4" lift with extended arms.

Could I.................

put on a 2" budget boost ie shackles and spacers as well as the existing 4" lift to give a 6" lift, so I could fit 32 or 33s on   as I presume as this is cheapest.

You could do, but it'll flex like a piece of shit. We've seen that done
You'll be wanting to think about a stronger drive train with a super 35 kit, SYE for the driveline vibes and a re-gear. And you'll still need bigger fender flares.

when you it will flex poorly   what do you mean by that? worse than as it is at the moment with a 4" lift.

and what is..............

super 35 kit
SYE
and a regear would that be for the diffs?

and with that fitted would it still flex poorly?

all this tech stuff is a bit out of my league
thanks guys

As you know, you need all 4 wheels on the ground for best traction. Good suspension flex is a measure of how bendy it is to achieve having all four wheels on the ground. Lifting by means other than springs doesn't flex well - might as well not bother.

Super 35 kit - the Dana 35c used in the XJ has fairly strong axle shafts, until you go above 31 inches, then it is a bit weak, and if you were to give it some welly, you might shear a shaft.

Slip Yoke Eliminator - being that tall makes the driveline angles from the transfer case to the diff unbearable - use one of these to correct it. A must with that much lift.

Regear for the diffs - standard gearing on 33s makes it more or less undriveable - 31s aren't great on standard gearing. Also buts more strain on the transfer case and gearbox with no regear.

And yes, with that fitted (there's about £1000 of mods there) it will still be shit.

Yep, that's about the size of it. Going above 31 (32" at a push) is going to cost serious dollars.

At the end of the day, 33" tyres are only going to give you 1" more clearence with all the extra expense to make them fit and work properly. A sorted XJ on 31s will handle almost anything you can throw at it just fine.
