more grand cherokee problems
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:33:05 PM »

got a call from new member rooneysfoot tonight

he had bad noise coming from the rear axle when driving forward, reverse seems ok

i went to have a look, jacked up rear of truck and rotated wheel, could feel no notches but it wasnt smooth either, i can only liken it to when you turn a shaft with a dodgy bearing. Same on both sides

Also there is at least 1/2 inch of end float on the axle, is this normal.

We are going to drop the diff cover tomoz to see if there is any oil in it and if we can see any signs of carnage inside.

Im hoping its just the oil, as i see some leakage from the seal where the propshaft is and that is has not done too much damage.

Any ideas folks, its a 97 grand 2.5 Laredo, also has it got an lsd fitted

Thanks

sounds like a pinion bearing, as most of the work is done forwards, its probably running out of alignment

1/2@ of float that sounds a tad excessive

It always smells like shite, but the metal particles are a sure sign of bearing failure.
