CJ7 5.2 V8 (ZJ) Engine swap
« on: May 11, 2008, 04:58:04 PM »

There is a ZJ 5.2 V8 im potentially interested in, so need some advice before i go wasting my money as my mate, who usually advises me and is also my handy and cheap mechanic, is so food poisoned that he cant talk without hurling (so his mrs reckons anyway).

so what i would like someone to tell me is:

on a scale of 1 to 10, with some advice thrown in please, how much difficulty will there be in gettin that V8 lobbed into in my CJ7?

I only have a baby 3.5 V8 at the mo.

if its a dumb question, no suprises, i have the mechanical nous of a fop

cheers

Novak do the engine mounts for a 318 in a CJ7, but you have to decide which gearbox and TC you're going to use also, so you can get adapters for those.

cheers Tim, very helpful, making the decision a bit less daunting, it has a 44RE tranny (so im told) so as that has overdrive and is more heavy duty, i would be keeping that (as long as it fits).

i think you would have to keep the zj gearbox and engine together just so that all the ecu crap would be happy  but you may run in to a snag with the front diff on your cj it sits on the drivers side if ya jeep is right hand drive on the zj i am darn sure its the other side [may be wrong] unless novak or AA do an adapter and spud to suit ya dana 300 to keep the props  in the rite place  on paper it sounds an awsome idea modern ish injected v8 in reality i think it would not be easy and may cost several times a s/hand chevy v8 or amc v8 [depedant on what gearbox you have and i also maybe wrongly think the overal trany length may be a tad to long a cool idea though :-D

Read this.... http://www.azvirtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?p=7205
Novak say that with a bit of modding, an AW4 adapter will fit onto a dana 300, so you can keep the 318, 44RE and the dana 300.

well it is blasphamy but you may consider junking your whole engine gearbox setup just drop the entire zj engine gear box  combo in and rob the coil springs and axle suspension set up a lot of work with welding stuff  but you could do away with ya leaf springs it would make a retromod cj but it would take a while to do

lol, blasphemy sounds good in a bad way, that was sorta what i was thinkin of doin (i would feel ashamed doin it tho!).

back to part of the original post, on a scale of 1 - 10, with 1 bein feckin impossible, and 10 bein a piece of piss, where would you put it?

my mate who does my work has his own repair business, but would this be too specialist or do you think he could do it? he has got some experince with basic rally cars and his business is succesful with happy customers, but is too much for your average man?

cheers again, appreciate your help

well, had a chat with my mate and he doesnt seem phased by it, just in the process of lobbing a 740 bmw engine in a 3 series so has done a bit anyway. seems to think it would be easier just to use all the zj anyway, which would be cool, proper looks but will shift as well  8-)

still wouldnt mind some jeepers 1 - 10 scores before i commit tho, its not looking too cheap

cheers

its gotta be a 3 approaching a 2 for pain in the ass value the key to making it all work out will be taking the utmost care stripping the zj of its looms and ecu.s and some good measurements for the welding in all honesty i wouldnt try it i think i would just have fun with the zj as it was or evan mod that plenty room for the exploding family
