I would recommend the Grand Cherokee as  I have a Grand Cherokee and I think its great, the coil springs all round are good off-road when it gets a bit twisty( the xj only has coils at the back obv.), I've got stuck a few times mainly due to the smaller wheels and getting stuck in other peoples deeper ruts bit that's only because bigger wheels are on the to do list.  Its got lovely road handling and you can really throw it about some but that causes bad gas mileage,  but its not quite as fun messing around at speed.. you will $h!t shit yourself.   But they will go most places and do most things.

Interior is good, but for such a big thing they could have made more use of the space available, it is nice and comfy though both front and back. And plenty of boot space  comfy to drive.  However the ltd has leather (I assume fake) and its stupid like all leather because it dosen't breath and on a long drive you get a sweaty ar$3 and to make it worse some half wit at Chrysler thought it would be a good idea to make them heated which is stupid because if you put them on when it cold it makes you feel like you pissed yourself and if you accidental leave the on when its hot and you dont realise then find you got a super sweaty ar$3 and it just stupid.
(sorry rant over)
the laredo however has fabric seats, I think

Reliabilty wise its been ok.  Only had to be rescued once when t case exploded.  Lots of servicing done( joints, bearings etc) but I suppose if you abuse it off-road and do stupid things then you will have to replace something, but apart from that one time its always got me home. And its reasonably simple to work on nothing super complex and all easily accessible.  Some of the metal bits are a bit soft though particuarly the sills, which were so thin it was hard to weld up the hole I made in them once and my mig goes down to 25A!

Another downside is that they are not so popular for off roading in and so accessories are hard to come by unlike for the xj which is something I never con sided when choosing between the zj and xj.  But in my opinion a stock zj is better than a  stock defender.  Cant vouch for the xj though ive never driven one

under the name of mattiemjbb,  it'll be at SS too, just need to fix:
 the engine fan,
replace passenger side fount bearing,
the water leak(s),
the smelly air con (like the smell in museums when where there showing what the plague smells like),
malfunctioning windscreen sprayer,
 leaking distributor pressurisation system,
major transfer case oil leek,
excessive steering play,
tracking,
Broken hand brake,
broken headlight
put the back bumper on which has half fallen off,
weld up exhaust,
and sort out rough idle.

You can get de-oderisers that you spray into the vents to clean and freshen the system. The smell is due to the build up of dirt, fungus and bacteria.   :vom:

Available from all good car accessory outlets.

My mates just bought a ZJ last week. I paid top whack for my XJ but its a great low mileage car from a dealer but after seeing what he paid for his, he stole the fuckin thing.
96 GC with FSH on 78k miles.  I have a 99 XJ Orvis and his is FAR better equipped than mine for........ £500.
I still prefer the XJ but the ZJ for £500! unreal. Bargain of the century and the fucker hummed and haaad about buying it!!
