Pinion bearings shot?
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:22:36 AM »

For the last few weeks my 01 XJ has developed a high pitched whinning noise from the front D30.  It's not apparent below 20mph, 25 -35 it's at is worst, over 35 it's constant pitch (high pitch).  My carrier bearings were replaced about 10000 miles ago and the noise is not the same as when they screwed up. Having said that, the "Specialist" outfit who replaced 'em 2 1/2 years ago are renowned for fucking up axles, you see the evidence as the dealership has to put right what they fucked up.  This outfit claimed they replaced my pinion bearings, pinion nut and seal, but I had to go back a few weeks later as the pinion seal was leaking.  They never replaced the pinion seal, so I'm pretty sure they never replaced the bearings........but no evidence.  Anyway if I knew then what I knew now, I would have realised I got billed for shit the fuckers never did.  Name and shame................like to lol.  One wheel bearing is brand new, other is good.  I figure it's the pinion bearing (s).  Appreciate any comments.

Well, one of my pinion bearings went recently which I have just replaced. However it wasn't a high pitche noise. If the bearing goes it'll make the prop shaft vibrate (because the pinion isn't being held in place properly) so in fact your more likely to get a low vibrating noise than a high pitched noise. I guess it really depends on how it's gone.

I ended up having to change some shims over on both the pinion and the diff and set that up properly, pain the in the backside of a job but do-able. Helps having a press etc.

I kinda get a very slight vibration, I can feel it thru the skinny pedal, the diff gets really quite hot, especially around the area where the seal is, hot to the touch after a 6 mile drive.  Hotter than the rear in the same area, and I would have thought the rear would get hotter tahn the front, being the driven axle and all.

Oh well, suck it an see.  I think I'll save up, get a Detroit TrueTrac for the front and replace all the gubbins in there at the same time.

Good idea! Get the master install kit too, comes with bearings and seals...

I have yet to find a master install kit except for a Yukon (Randys) which included the inner seals.
Dont start without them.

You should easily be able to re-use the plate, I did on mine with no probs.

When I did my R&P's dana 30 and 35 I got all the bits needed with the install kit, got them from lighthouse. Nothing missing and in fact had some spares because I fitted the True Trac on the Dana35 which came with new bearings and seals.

But as Mik says make sure it's all there first!
