96 Grand Cherokee rear wheel bearing

Hi,
I've had a growl from the rear wheel bearing since I bought the motor. I bought a pair of wheel bearings and oil seals but cannot get the halfshaft out.

My manual (CD upto 2002) shows 2 axles that look very similar but not quite the same as mine. Hand brake on mine is drum inside the disc. The manual said to extract the halfshaft with a slide hammer after removing the retaining plate. I tried this without success. The retaining plate doesn't appear to retain anything, just mounts the caliper and back plate.

Do I need to disconnect something in the diff before removing the halfshaft.

dont know if they the same, but i had same prob with the CJ when i changed the seals, my problem was they way the slide hammer fitted to the end of the shaft (not secure or square) anyway i made this and the shaft poped out with ease

Mike will be able to give more specific info, but I think you will find there are a pair of retaining spring clips inside the diff housing which need releasing before the halfshafts will come out.
The old AMC corporate axles on my CJ7 are held together with 4 bolts through a squareish plate hiding inside the brake drum but not sure about the newer stuff - that was always too expensive for me to mess with  :lol:

Think it may be different, I can't see how I could fix your tool to my hub. My tool is much uglier as I had to make the slide hammer as well. Just been reading a 99 Cherokee manual which looks much more like my axle but with different brakes. Beginning to wonder if I have the correct manual for my motor.

check out my posts, im sure you have a 35c as i messed with a 97 grand cherokee a couple of months back and you dont need a slide hammer, once the clip is out it should just slide out :wink:

Thanks for that.

I will try again tomorrow. It would make sense for there to be a retaining clip in the diff as I can't see what else would keep the halfshaft in (apart from the brake caliper).

If it is a '96 to '98 it has a Dana 35c, the shafts are held in by C clips inside the differential. Don't use a slide hammer unless you really want to break something expensive.
Also bear in mind that if it is a 35c, the bearing runs direct on the shaft so if this is causing the noise, you may well require a new shaft. Secondly, wheel bearing like noises on the rear of 35c equipped Jeeps are usually caused by diff carrier bearings anyway so you could be wasting your time.

The one i messed with was like that, the carrier bearings were shot and so was everything else inside the diff, when you drain the diff oil see whats in the bottom of the housing and check for play in the 2 carriers.

Guess I'm going to be busy.

The front one is even worse. Previous owner took propshaft and half shafts out for "economy". Found out when looking for a rattle that he'd taken the CVs out with a gas axe and left the halfshafts in the axle.

well i own the 97 grand that everyones referring to i can tell you that once it went in2 the garage the bearings collapsed because everything else in the diff had gone!!!

i took mine to mik stansfield in yorkshire....i say i took it.....i joined the rac and they took us!!! di save fuel 2!!

once the parts are with mik my car was running again within 24 hours and not a problem or a rumbling nosie since

so if you want his number let me know
