Gear convertions anyone?

My 1975 SWB J26 is running well but revs hard above 55mph.

I've looked at fitting an overdrive or swaping to a 5 speed box but there isn't enough room for them.

So now I'm back at the drawing board and wondering if changing the number of teeth in the rear drive would help.

Can anyone advise me on this.
Is it worth doing?
Who could do it for me?

Bigger tyres would help  :twisted:  

Alternatively higher (lower numerically) axle gears would work but can be quite an expensive job. What axles do you have?

James,

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I've gone from 15" to 16" rims which have helped.

Sorry to be so thick - what type of axles are there?
I just know you don't want to be told "They're Japanese".
I've been told my J26 is basically a CJ3B made under license if that helps at all.

This 4x4 stuff is all new to me - I used to fix/ride motorbikes so that's the level of my knowledge & experience.

Any help will be very much appreciated as this is the final major work to get my Jeep up to the standard I want.

How do I get in touch with Mik?
I've got the next 2 weeks off so I can drive my Jeep a reasonable distance so work can be discussed and if the cost is within my budget I can leave it for as long as is necessary.

Can you post a picture of your jeep and pictures of the differential covers of your axles?

Also, what revs does it get to at what speeds, and what do you want them to be ideally??

Of course if the thing hasn't enough power, raising the gearing will just mean you end up changing down every time you see a hill.

There seems to be enough at the moment from the 2.4 Ltr Petrol ASTRON which had the head skimmed last year as part of some engine work I needed to get done.
Whether this would be the case after changing ratios is a good point.
Maybe I am looking at a compromise?

I would like to keep my J26 looking the same as it is now
but I also use it as my daily vehicle so going above 55 Mph (preferably up to 65/70) at lower revs is my priority.
(So I can use the Motorway more safely - both for myself and other road users).
I only do gentle Green Laning when going Off Road.

This is the last modification on my list.
When this is done I will be a very happy camper.

James, Mike,

Hopefully here is a link through to pictures of my transmisson I've uploaded onto Photobucket, starting at the rear, going down the nearside to the front.
I've also remembered that there is a bracket for the clutch slave cylinder which mounts onto the nearside of the gearbox. Which is another problem that would have to be overcome if the existing set-up was changed.

Sounds like a very good idea.

I've heard good things about the people who go
not too many "Waxed Cotton Moustaches" or "Extreme Off Road Chav" from what I've been told.

Any details yet on the location/directions, etc?

Well the differential pictures look like you have a Dana 44 rear and a Dana 30 front. Others here may already have known that, or may correct me.

Re-gearing them should be fairly straightforward and gear choices will be good.

If this is the last job to do and you think the engine has enough power to propel the jeep safely at motorway speeds then speak to someone about regearing the axles (Mik knows his stuff but who you use may depend on your location).

P.S. I asked for an overall pic to see if bigger tyres would look good but I think it's a nice looking restored jeep and there isn't tons of room for big tyres.

Thanks for your advice and comments.
I like to think its a reasonable restor and agree regarding bigger tyres (alhough I have got the fatter 15" set for when I'm feeling like a pottle down a BOAT).

Sounds like good fun. It can't be any worse than the outing I tried to orgainse with some of the POUK people in the Forest Of Dean one Sunday - I was the only one to turn up! (That only usually happens AFTER people have met me).

Thanks for the welcome.

We are out riding tomorrow morning. Girlfriend = Horse, me = Mountain bike. Then we are going to Hartpury.
(Being a member of the Mitsubishi Owners Club I have managed to blag a free pass).

So if you are anywhere down towards Cheltenham/Gloucester drop me a pm.

I am absolutely new to this stuff so the only thing I could probably tell you is about a Lane down Winchcombe hill which is VERY steep and rutted then ends in a well maintained 5 bar gate - 100 metres before the road I was expecting to come out on!  :lol:
