Cambelt on a 2.5 petrol

Hi all

I opened the bonnet (hood lol) on my Cherokee 2.5 petrol Sport only to discover it has a bloody cambelt.  Is the 2.5 petrol the only jeep to have a cambelt?  I was expecting to find a camchain.  

Also, roughly how much would it cost to get it replaced?

How old is it, the older ones upto around 2000 didn't have a cam belt thats for sure

The only petrol Cherokee to have a cambelt is the 2001 onwards KJ Cherokee 2.4.

are you sure your not mistaking the serpentine belt at the front

strange you should mention a 2.5 petrol i was  woken from my sleep last night by a psychic  vision where i had to change the timing chain  sprockets and tensioner on one how common is it for the tenssioner to fail

Ooops yeah that's the one.  So that's not a cambelt then?  What does it do and where is the camchain as I can't see where it is...under a cover somewhere I suppose.   Its a 1993 BTW.

The chain is behind the crank pulley. You gave an old fashioned pushrod engine there so stop worrying.

looks like the sump has to come off to replace all of the tensioner i dont understand how it might fail as it is not pumped up by oil i am wondering if it is the chain shoe that wears

the belt at the front drives the cooling fan, alternator, water pump and power steering,

a nice simple basic engine compared to others
