D44 rear axles

Which is the strongest D44 rear in a UK supplied jeep?

Is it worth the hassle going from a D35c when going to 33"s

Upgradeitis is creeping in

YES YES YES
Your Dana 35c with 33s will let go in a big way within a few months especially if you are running a locker. Mine did.... on the rocks at Tong....
Try and get a Dana 44 from a TJ it will fit most Jeeps with the correct spring perches replaced and they can be found just don't pay too much.
The stronger Jeep answer is a 44 from a late FSJ Waggoner wms to wms will be an inch smaller but you'll never know. Tubes are thicker and less prone to bending and the brakes are bigger.... Good point...
If you don't mind width of 65 inches as opposed to Wrangler 60 inches get a used Dana 60 from a J20 you'll never break it or lift it ... Just a thought though the stud pattern of 8 lugs will be a challenge. The Waggy is 6 lug but can be changed (with research).

Was reading that d44 from a TJ is less strong than a ZJ even with the ally centre (read of go jeep)

"Due to the inherent weakness of the stock D35 axle housing and also the C clips which would allow the whole wheel and axle to depart the Jeep should a axle break, I fitted up a brand new ( NOS ) D44 for a MJ Comanche, ( Cherokee pickup ) in place of it. Easier still, if using stock shock and spring mounts, you can also just bolt in a D44 from a 87-89 XJ that was often found when the tow package was ordered. These are stronger than the D44's fitted to the TJ Wrangler's as those have the smaller and thinner axle tubes the same as the D35. Surprisingly considered weaker than a ZJ D44 with a aluminium centre and weaker still than a Chrysler 8.25! Details gained from JP Magazine axle comparisons in August 2007 edition."

An easier option is to get a newer Chrysler 8.25 - the 29 spline one

A little weaker than a D44 but much easier to get - facelift 2.5L petrols.

shaft dia at splines:
dana 44 = 1.281"
29 spline 8.25 = 1.25"
dana 35 = 1.172"
27 spline 8.25 = 1.148"

shaft dia at neckdown:
dana 44 = 1.234"
29 spline 8.25 = 1.141"
dana 35 = 1.117"
27 spline 8.25 = 1.039"

The neck down on the Chrysler shafts is much longer than on the Dana - this gives a larger area to absorb the torque without creating any stress raisers.

It is NOT as strong - but gets there in the use that is subjected to (It's normally shock loading that shears it rather than true torque)

speaking of facelift cherrys, what axle does the 2.8 diesels run



EDIT, oh its the same across all the facelift range. Still it would get me to keep my abs and gain rear disks, but is it worth it over the D35

You can forget keeping the ABS if you are doing an axle swap. The newer KJ Cherokee uses an 8.25 but with a completely different ABS system and sensors.

I have a 29 spline C8.25 in my Xj with Alloy shafts and full detroit locker, I'd be surprised if I broke it in UK conditions with 35s, let alone the current 33s.

why do you want ABS anyway. all it does is stop the wheels from locking, but it doesn't slow you down as quick as a non ABS system. great in the summer but try and stop quickly when it's icy or snow and your stuffed.

Most things will do now, a set of decent tyres aint far off the value of a 4l XJ. Mine is low milage and LPG so in it for the long term
