front wheel hub mk1 xj
« on: August 20, 2008, 06:00:23 PM »

i'm in the process of removing the front LHS UJ for service/replacement. The only issue is the removal of the wheel hub. The shaft locking nut was unervingly easy to remove but the three hub bolts look a bit siezed in place. being soaked with plus gas and brake fluid at the moment. the real question is.... the three bolts holding the hub on are a spline type. anyone know what size they are ? (spline socket and bolt thread)  the downside is that the splines look a bit knackered so i'm expecting them to round off.

i might just end up cutting the heads off and replace with a new hub but the top bolt under the ball joint looks like it cold be fun in removing.

any tips greatfully taken,  (dont want to go to cheapfest in a vitara)

You need a double hexagon socket. Depending how rusty the heads are (give them a good wire brushing) I would try hammering a 1/2" one on first, normally a 13mm will do it but better to try the smaller one first if they're really bad. I actually had to use a 12mm on one the other day it was so rotten.

thanks for that Mike

wirebrushing didn't improve the look, so it might be a case of hammering on the small socket

i take my hat of to you Bubba knocked on a 1/2" multi spline and set to with the 1/2" breaker bar and the damm bolts came out, i was surprised.

getting the hub off via the haynes manual didn't work, well i stopped before damage was done and used a puller, haynes manual ignore it and use common sense.  axle is now with the local garage getting the new uj pressed in so it should be nice and ready for cheapfest

the uj looked well rusted into place and at the moment just didn't fancy the hassle and frustration of pushing the caps out so the local garage has the job for the price of a couple of beers

went to the garage to collect the uj, the sods hadn't done due to "being too busy" told them if it was on the car it would have been done.
took it home and did it myself with some basic tools 20 mins later ready to be fitted. Now fitted and works a treat but i now need to replace the top control arms as they seem to be clunking.
it's great fix one thing and find it's another that needs doing as well.

it's a good job i like jeeps !!!
