Sudden unintended acceleration
« on: October 01, 2008, 09:34:27 PM »

Hello my name is john and I have 2006 3.7 Cherokee LTD. Is anyone aware of sudden unintended acceleration? This as happened twice once back in May and the other time last week 23/09/08. The car accelerated from 20mph up to 70 mph, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ALONG AT AROUND 07:20 ON THE 23/09/08 AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH. SHE PUT HER FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE AT A SPEED GREATER THAN THE PRESSURE OF HER FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, SHE REMOVED HER FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT THE CAR KEPT INCREASING SPEED UP TO APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, SHE THEN PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THIS HAD NO IMPACT ON THE SPEED OF THE CAR, SHE THEN STARTED TO PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT STILL THIS HAD NO AFFECT. SHE THEN TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND USED THE COMBINATION OF THE FOOT BRAKE AND HAND BRAKE TO EVENTUALLY STOP THE CAR 3 FOOT FROM A LARGE IRON GATE.
SHE NOTICE THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD NO TENSION TO IT WHEN SHE GOT OUT OF THE CAR.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS AS HAPPENED. I WAS DRIVING THE FIRST TIME AND THE SAME OCCURRENCE HAPPEN AS ABOVE, BUT WITH THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT AFTER A COUPLER OF PUMPS OF THE BRAKE PEDAL THE CAR CAME BACK UNDER NORMAL CONTROL. AFTER THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WE RETURNED THE CAR BACK TO MAIN DEALER  AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE ACCELERATOR CABLE HAD COME OUT OF ITS SUPPORT CHANNEL/GUILD AND GOT STUCK AROUND SOMETHING? AFTER SPEAKING TO THEM ON THE 25/09/08 THEY NOW TELL US THAT THEY REPLACED THE CABLE ON THE FIRST TIME, BUT THIS TIME THEY PULLED THE CABLE TIGHT AND PUT A NUT & BOLT TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. (COWBOYS). BY DOING THIS THEY HAVE CHANGED THE MANUFACTURES SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CAR. CHRYSLER HAVE SENT OUT ONE OF THERE ONLY SPECIAL INVESTIGATORS TO LOOK OVER THE CAR, BUT NOT HOLDING OUT FOR MUCH HOPE, AS THEY NOT GOING TO KNOCK THERE OWN CARS? CAN ANYONE HELP? MY WIFE DOES NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR AGAIN.

MANY THANKS JOHN

that sounds a bot dodgy. i would get an independent qualified mechanic to look at it and then report what they say to the steelership.

Aren't events like that usually related to a dodgy cruise control?

Sounds like a sticking throttle cable to me, you can disconnect the cruise control cable to see if that is playing up though

My experience of this is more like, a chrysler manager has said to his team "who wants a trip to the uk?".

if the dealer had to put an additional nut onto the throttle cable to take the tension up then something is blatantly wrong, and should not have been issued or at least it should have been test driven first. As said above what you can do is disconnect the cruise control at the throttle body ontop of the engine and then check see what happens (obviously carefully). you have a 50/50 chance of getting the right one, either you will have a throttle or you dont

or is this one fly by wire ?

it could also possibly be a dodgy throttle position sensor, as this feeds all the info to the managment system.I have seen a ford granada do similar things and it was eventually traced back to the TPS!

perhaps get an independent party to investigate - RAC or AA
and if its a safety issue, get them to repair and charge to JEEP
as they are incompetent.

you dont ever want to risk your life and your family's life driving
the jeep again until is it completely sorted out. wife always knows
best.

also get trading standards and motoring organisation involved.
