Shock mount on TJ axle
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:16:52 PM »

Minor problem today, noticed the rear shock was not attached to the axle

The shock mount to the axle is sheared off, not at the weld but approx half way up the bracket.

Where can i get a new mount to weld on to the axle ???

Its a 97 TJ

Will see if i can load a piccie

Is it just made out of sheet / plate steel ?

If so & you can get it off (both bits) for a pattern, so long as the bends are straight without any fancy joggles I might be able to get a replacement made up.

Oh & how thick is the material its made from ?

Let me know

Been thinking today about relocating the shock mounts to the top of the axle tubes.

Only thing which concerned me was the heat build up welding. Pulling the halfshafts and draining all the oil is the solution I suppose?

Oil does not go to the top of the tube.....

But the oil does go down the tube. Welding with enough heat to be good penetration will be hot enough for it to catch i'd have thought?

just a guess, are you saying tube fills with oil=no oxygen=no fire and oil keeps heat away from seals?

the oil wont light it has no air in there. there is no problem welding to the tubes as long as there is not to much penetration and in any case there is plenty of room between the shaft and the tube wall. as for your bracket Steve we can weld it easy enough and strengthen it if ya like. 8-)
