Winchy winchy
« on: February 10, 2009, 12:27:18 PM »

After 8 years of hydraulic winch on the YJ I finally decided to get some speed on the front bumper!
Don't get me wrong the Milemarker is bulletproof and has got others headlamp deep out of the goo where electrics have overheated. Just part of my losing the lard (selling the doors etc) and refocusing on what sort of offroading nutter I have become!
So a new Warn 8274  is stupid money anything from £1200 to £1800!!!! Don't believe me ...go google!
I have been e-blagging on the lookout for a few weeks and the amount of 8274s has been about 8 in the last 3 weeks anything from £300 for a rebuild project to £560 for one I just missed! Finally got one at £440 so relatively happy. Also got me looking at spares and upgrades. They have been in production since 1949???? With a few changes. All parts available.
Many upgrades available more powerful motor, better brake, allbright solenoid etc etc.
The one that really made me laugh was the talented guys at Gigglepin that do billet housings that take 2 motors and can be geared to 40odd% faster??????!!!!!!!.
So that got me onto the NAXJA site where Vince Bentley was explaining to the American guys how Winch Challenges in the UK have become winch races. Basic premis is that if your 'lardy' has crap axle shafts, inadequate gearing and you get stuck then winch your way round the course at driving speed!!!
Me?   Personally I could'nt comment.
The 8274 needs a clean and maybe in-cab control. Got a winch mount already. And the milemarker is going on the back to haul me out of the goop if I go too deep. Also to rescue others as before.
Also to be done is a fuel cell in the rear as I run LPG and am aware of the pump/heat/low fuel scenario. Also give me a chance to lose the 3/16 thick amour on the tank that weighs 72lbs.!!!
Cheers all Jez

Wine fact
« Reply #5 on: February 10, 2009, 09:00:03 PM »

So here's an Oz Clark wine fact (guess what I've been watching?)
The 8274 we recognize came to this world in 1974 and had a 2.5 hp motor
and without load would spool in at 52ft per min 8000lb rated
The 8275/50 of recent years was rated at 4.6hp and spools at 73.4per min. also 8000lb rated
As an upgrade the older winch will accept the newer motor or!!!!! a motor from the 9.5 for £300.
So if you fry your motor its upgrade time!

This could get addictive......... You effectively 'hot rod' your truck and then you start hotrodding your winch?????!!!!

for just a winch they get complicated!!!

they were originally designed an built by a company called belview as a 6000lb single direction winch. warn bought it an ran it for a short time till they realised how strong it was, an simply changed the tags to make a 8000lb winch an it was called an 8074 the freespool an brake were all in cab cable operated.

i have recently aquired 2 of them. i went to ashford (12 hours) for the first then last week i found out a mate (20mins away) has one from the back of his scrap yard waggon. so ive made him give me it :smt021 !!!! as there's not many in this country.

warn then changed the casing design to what it is now an replaced tghe single direction motor with a 2 direction and added the retchet type brake it has now.

Sorry wazza me fingers were bleeding after multiple bids to get it?
But I bet I really pissed the guy who paid 560....
I put a sneaky bid in when it sat at 390 for 394 in the last minute and BANG it came back as outbid, please  bid 560 or more. So someones bidding coffers were rogered on that one? Can't think how that would happen?
Seems there's a never ending stream of Warns like this that are being hacked of the back of recovery vehicles or fork lift trucks or lardrovers worth less than the winch. Maybe now's the time to start a collection?
Sorry it was a Birty's that I outbid though.

I've had exactly the same problem bidding against people I know now they've hidden all bidder ID's

One of those things were you don't want to be posting links of things asking people not to bid since it's advertising potential bargains.

its up to the seller, if the bidder id's are a secret or not, cos i let people see who's who

thats ok, i don't mind people i sort of know getting things i don't. its probly a good thing i didn't get it anyway!!! ive now stopped myself from looking!

king cj, is it a warn 8274 lookylike??? cos the 8074's were a dealer option arround the 60's on most 4x4s, so it wouldnt surprise me if jeep stamped theirown logo into it!

Christ these buggers are heavy must be 130 odd lbs with the winch mount plate that came with.
Thats going!!.  as it is not Jeep specific. ugly big bastard painted red that looks like a grader blade. Must contribute to the weight somewhat.
Been used with Hawse and cable so hawse is galled and cable has nasty little 'soldiers'
Might be looking for cable next. Fantasy half hour says 'plasma and stainless hawse' but financial reality than kicks me in the butt.

Got a nice remote about 20 feet long thick cable and  connected with big blue connectors (similar to the yellow doobies on transformers).

Now to take it to bits and do and 'exploratory'

Sure Wazza, might be a bit of a wait tho!
Some one on e bay is selling a motor just put warn winch in the cat box to see all warn goodies up for auction.

Also got some cable off e-blag unused cable from a 9500 that had gone plasma and a roller fairlead for £23 the both.
Only 100' but tight wads can't be too fussy.
