Can I use this front Prop? - G/Cherokee MK1 '97 4.0ltd Auto
« on: February 21, 2009, 03:01:05 PM »

My Jeep didn't have a front prop when I got it, so I've got a front prop for my G/Cherokee 1997 (P Reg) ( it's a CV type) from a Jeep Breakers. They ( the breakers) tell me it's the correct prop for my car, a 4.0 ltd RE42 Auto transmission. Their own invoice says check with a mechanic before fitting. So I rang Jeep and gave them the code from the prop. They (Jeep) told me the prop I have is from a 1995 car and that I should get hold of, and then they gave me three codes which identify  propshafts of the same year of manufacture and transmission type, as my car.
I rang the Breaker back. He says, of course I can return it, but that there is no difference in the dimensions of the props and I should just put in on.
Does anyone know if there is a good reason why I should not just put it on? Could it be a different lenght or have a different length of travel in the CV joint? Advice will be much appreciated ( very close to being ready for off-road fun  :-D )

There were different lengths due to a change in the design of the front diff housing between years but I don't remember which. I came across it once when I swapped a front axle in from a different year car, Had to change the propshaft cos the original was too long for the replacement axle. If it is too long you could damage the transfer case if it cant compress enough. If it's too short it could com apart when fully extended. Offer it up with the jeep on its wheels, if it fits without a struggle (you dont have to squeeze it in or extend it a long way) it should be ok.

Hi Mike, thanks for the advice. I did offer the prop up into place. I pushed the CV end into the bell housing and it fitted snug ( without screwing it in). But the other end seems to be 10mm short, maybe more ( sorry didnt meassure), that was with the prop in it's natural extension. When I attempted to extend the joint, it popped out of the bell housing end. I tried this a coupe of times and then came to the conclusion it was too short. Should I have bolted it on (1 or 2 bolts) and then tried again or does it sound asif it's the wrong size? I have a picture which I'll upload later, but I have to dash now. Dave

Bolt it to the axle yoke and see if you have any extension left after it's pulled out enough to mate upwith the transfer case properly.
