So took out the gearbox today, and the shaft that goes into the clutch has about ¼” play, took the shaft out and found the inner roller bearing has eaten its cage. There seems to be some abnormal wear to the 1st gear cog but not so bad that I’m desperate to change it.

Now the hunt starts for a rebuild kit I can afford.

found a use for the Isuzu :lol:

the cardon yoke for the d300 turned up today from 4WD, now prop now fitted just need to get some gearbox and diff oil tomorrow and its a drver again :twisted:

AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHH

I dont fukin believe it, long drive (ish) to get exhaust re-routed today due to trans belly pan moving when new gearbox was fitted, new prop on and most of the bumps and grinds had seemed gone on way there, kept it gentile cos exhaust was tied on, but on way back gave some right foot and it happened again, 1st gear ok to about 3000 revs and then it gives this allmighty screeming grinding noise like 2 cogs not meshing, dip clutch and it goes higher gears dont seem to do it and i have run out of things to change now :evil:

ok just did a quick test, 2nd gear in low and it does same, going to back track a few of the last jobs, oh joy!!!!

so its not kicking out of gear ?
it makes a niose like gears climbing over themselves in high first and low second with lots of boot ?
when is making the noise can you feel it through the gear stick or the tops of the twin sticks?
you sure the front drive not trying to slip in to gear take the gaters of the gear sticks and make sure you have got planty of room around them from the floorpan and that you aint got a broken engine mount
is ther any debris in the trasfer case

it sounds lke its jumping out of gear but the gearstick does not "jump" out, if you take it out of gear and put it back it drives like normal again, clearence is fine around the sticks (have tried with tunnel cover removed)

I have taken the top off the box and think I might have an idea, would it be posible to fit the top cover onto the box and not get the forks right but for it to still change gear, but not fully engage gear enough so tourque will through it out of gear?

umm maybe but i doubt it when it was in my jeep it had plenty torque goin through it with no jumpin can you feel the grating through the rear wheel transfer stick

I took the top cover off when fitting the box, thats why I ask if its posible I refitted it wrong, its only happened 3 times, once while driveing and twice induced by me as tests, I've not made it happen while holding the transfer box sticks.

before fitting I inspected the cogs and all were fine/unmarked as expected, I have taken off the top cover again and had a quick inspection and the top cog nearest the clutch has a small but visible grove now, I also drained the oil and its fine, no bits, but I ran out of time and had to get in for 7. :-?

Ok, gear selector sorted, not sure it was wrong but deff ok now.

And problem has been identified according to a mate (landy driver) and his answer seems feasible. Rear diff is binding, he recons it has tightened up, just waiting for a dial gauge. On opening the diff cover found a very fine metallic dust in the oil so this also points to same problem.

So looks like diff is apart for the 4th time this year lol

That’s the problem, something isn’t working, I just misdiagnosed the problem, I attributed the gear grinding to the box, but it now seems to be the diff binding, it’s also likely that the old SR4 box is fine, but don’t tell the wife!

not binding, found the broken bit spline in the spider gear has stripped

3 days to find one and fit it HELP!!!!

na just stupid, should have checked splines when i fitted drive shafts, would have saved a shed load of grief.
