258 oil pump pick-up
«

I started today on trying to sort the blow by oil leak.
Before the strip down I tried fitting a new PCV, it helped a lot, leak down to a dribble and pressure is up to 20lbs at revs, but very low at idle.
Not quite as the book said, didn’t need to take exhaust off, but did need to remove off side engine mount, rest as book, starter motor and cross brace had to come out too.
After removing the oil pump the pick up fell off, every thing I have read so far says if the pick up tube is removed you need a new pump unit. I have tried expanding the tube to create a tight fit but it looks like the hole it sits in is tapered, run out of light for tonight but will try to seal with O ring tomorrow or does anyone have another solution.
I would think that if the pick up isn’t air tight that would cause low oil pressure. Does that sound right?
Tomorrow new rear main seals and reassembly

the pick up gauze was clogged and because of that I thought there was a chance the pressure release valve might be bunged up too, which it was, and thought these could explain low pressure, as it happens the pick up tube was already loose so I now believe this is the main reason for the low pressure.

sounds feasable but normaly its down to the lies told by the oil gage
just think yorkshire fisherman
checking with a capillary gage is the only true way to establish whats going on but 258s dont make big nos

not expecting a lot
maybe 40 at start up when cold, 10 at idle and 25 with revs when warm
getting 10/25 cold and 0/10 warm at the moment, did gain a little with the PCV but not a lot.

I'd mic up the crank and check the shells while you're in there.

thats too scary, I know your right but cant afford to open that can of worms just yet, no knocks so might leave well alone.
when the Isuzu is back on the road I will be doing something with the Jeep engine, either rebuild or replace, ideally prep new engine before removing old, but thats a while yet.

That's about what mine does.
And mine got a leak on the rear seal, it don't loose a lot, but it gets everywhere.
Still, keeps the underside well lubed

Job finished, front diff pinion seal fitted and front prop in place
All was leak free till I took it on a faster run around the by-pass pressure held up OK, down to about 15 after 20 mins or so, and when I got home found a few drops of oil on the floor. Think it’s as good as its going to get without a full rebuild so will live with it.
