potential headgasket on potential purchase?
« on: April 12, 2009, 08:52:15 PM »

Ok chaps
I have been looking at a late 4.0 xj on lpg after being jeepless for too long.
It has issues, the main being that it runs roughly on both petrol & gas, I think It may need a head gasket as there was quite an amount of water running out of one of the exhuast joints when cold! no water in oil but couldnt check coolant for contamination as it was too low due to a split hose!
didnt seem to overheat despite this and oil pressure was ok.
I wondered if someone can tell me the cost to have a headgasket done if required and if the head is likely to need skimming??
I have had the diesel versions previously so not too familliar with this engine.
thanks!

I wouldn't bother personally, there are enough cheap ones out there is good order not to get a one that could be a money pit

Fair point, If it didnt have lpg I wouldnt give it a second thought but I cant find many for sale and cant wait for too long.
this particular one will also have to be cheap, I know how quickly things add up!

Water in the exhaust is normal when cold. It's a by-product of the combustion process and will condense in a cold exhaust pipe. If it steams when hot and smells of antifreeze, then it's broken.

as Mike says dont worry too much about water running out of the exhaust as this is not an indication of a head gasket problem. if it was the engine would be running very poorly and you would have walked away.
when the engine is idleing is should be smoothe and quiet with not odd sounds. The mk4 escorts were known for the water collecting in the exhaust but it never caused any problems apart from the silencer rotting from the inside out

Make a "worst case scenario" of what you might have to spend on it.
Then make a low offer based on that an leave them to fester with it.
You might get lucky, get it cheap and fix it cheap.

I my experience if you come across someone who is absolutely determined to get an extorionate top $$$ price for a pile o'shite, wish them well and walk away

It certainly wasnt running well so I wanted to budget in the price of a headgasket replacement just incase, but no idea of the labour charge for one??
