Hi Guys
I have a slight prob with me ABS. It seems to work fine .. but too much .

Under normal breaking the ABS kicks in , but with a Booiiinngg noise from under the bonnet and a juddering from the brake pedal accompanied by a chattering noise. ( best description I could come up with)

I have recently changed the axle .. This noise did not occur before that .

I am thinking maybe the sensors on the back wheels?
I did have to disconnect the vacuum pipe from the rear , and replaced it at the same time.

Not familiar with ABS at all so any help would be great.

The brakes stop the car no probs

By the way it is a 2000 orvis xj 4.0l

Could there be any other explanation , cos the axle was from an identical model jeep, but a 1999 not a 2000?

Hasnt the orvis got an lsd

a standard 99 4litre wont have

The axle was from an orvis.

What's an lsd? :-(

Been driving it with the condition now but it does not do it all the time , so I am tending to think there is a dodgy sensor involved.. gonna try swapping back to old ones as they look identical and see what appens.

LSD

Limited Slip Differential. one rear wheel will spin slightly then the rear differential will lock the two rear wheels so they will then turn at the same rate improving traction. when your driving along after the rear differential will then operate as normal.

the LSD should not have any effect on the way the ABS works

Ah.. senior moment .. lol

I do know what it is .. but for the life of me could not get the LSD bit

tone rings are normally at the wheel end of the axle and no where near the diff, correct me if wrong

Used to be the case but nowadays some have a single tone wheel on the ring gear for ABS and vehicle speed sensing.

i know that most new auto's have sensors on the ring gear and driveline so that they can referance to the engine and select the appropriate gear but i thought that there was a sensor on the rear axle near the wheel for sensing wheel lock up

Hi guys
there are 2 sensors on my axle .. one for each wheel. There is no sensor at the diff position .

It is a Dana 35c.. which is stamped on the axle ( both old and replacement )

It is weird what happening , cos it is not all the time which is pushing me to think one of the sensors is buggered.

The other question is .. does the abs make a boing noise when activated , never had it go on before , but mine does.

The brakes actuallly work great .

have you counted the number of teeth on each tone ring yet

i had the same when i replaced a driveshaft on a Clio, they had changed the design in that particular year and the number of teeth was decreased by 2 :twisted:

just mark a tooth with tipex and then count round the ring

if a sensor is not working wouldn't the abs warning light be illuminated. but since these sensore are magnetic they do pick up small pieces of metal which could affect the tone pulse. the blot holding these on could be rusted in place so give it a soaking of penitrating oil first before removal

Would rust on the tonewheel affect the sensor?

rust on the tone wheel should have no effect on the pulse pickup. as the tone ring basically looks like the top of a castle wall. whel a high point passes the sensor it creates a signal and then when the low point passes there is no signal. the abs computer measures these on off signals to calculate whether the wheel is turning or not in relation to the others, so a bit of rust or discolouration should not have any effect

Try bleeding the whole system through, you might have a small bit of air in the brakes and it's causing the ABS to not give a positive result.

I think I will replace the sensors with the original ones from the old axle and see if that cures it . Will have a crack at the weekend.

bled system thoroughly when changing axle .. actually renewed all the fluid sd s mstter of course, nice clean fluid at all four wheels.
I did this cos the lubrication of the xj was non existent when I aquired the car. The only thing left to top up now is the transfer box, and 2 more oil changes to get the engine sweet.
