got myself a media blasting gun for removing the rust from the yj  tub and cleaning up small areas, anyone used one? I know the safety side of things but wondering what is the best media to use to clean up the rusty areas?

I can’t really answer the question about rust  removal on your YJ, but I have a sandblaster attachment for the Karcher pressure washer and rather than using expensive grit, I bought a bag of kiln-dried sand from the local B&Q and it seemed to work a treat on metal garden furniture.

I looked at them but came up with the idea that using one that blasts using water, is just a bad thing for the likes of bodywork,you want to keep moisture aways from clean metal but its ok for iron etc and cleaning brickwork etc.

The point I was trying to make in my original post was that the proper grit is very expensive, but the kiln dried sand was a fraction of the price.

I will be trying that kiln dried sand first, just got to get it into the range of the air hose.

I used to have a pressure pot type blaster and used Kiln dried in it, works a treat.

Heres the secret to using kiln dried, sieve it first.  It's full of big lumps of charcoal and it's was forever blocking the tubes untill I started sieving first.

Maybe big lumps is an exaggeration but fairly big compaered to a grain of sand!

You need to be very careful with sand due to the silicone content and the risk of silicosis from the dust that is generated, blasting media is producd from materials to reduce this risk.

these are good but they can punch holes in thin metal creating more welding work.

its only for cleaning small areas and the end of the roll bar bolts so i can remove the  fecker, and yes i have masks and goggles etc quite aware of not wearing the correct safety wear, when i was younger i ended up in hospital due to breathing in iscocyanates i think thats how its spelt but it fucked my stomoche up good and propper

Go and ask someone who runs a blast cleaning business about the health risks of using non aproved blasting media and the possible long term damage to ya lungs.
Also remember it aint just what your blasting with, it's what's coming off the surface too.
Guy I know uses an umbilical air fed mask all the time when he's blasting.
