XJ Cherry Towing Capacity?
« on: April 25, 2009, 03:07:43 PM »

What will an XJ Cherry with a 4.0 High Output safely tow?
Must be plenty of Birtys that have done some heavy towing with one.
I'd think the 174-194ish Bhp would be enough grunt to pull most things, but what will one actually tow safely without getting the death wobbles and lurching all over the road?

That's pretty good.

Do they actually tow well at that or is it a white knuckle jobbie?

pulled a few things with mine and never had a problem, mind you a lot of its down to how yo load the trailer, twin wheel trailers just tow a lot better and are more stable.

Too true!

I got away with towing a 14' twin axle transporter with a CJ7 on it all the way back from Surrey with my MINDY with no problems (got the CJ well back to get the CG right)

But a 17' Ifor Williams wide bed (800Kg empty) with a J series rolling chassis on it back from West Wales was just OTT, never actually went out of control.
But it wanted to!

the 4ltr is a great car to tow with as the engine is very capepable.

ive towed a two wheel car trailor with a 2.5 petrol xj with no problems, just remember to allow more room to stop and slow down before you noramlly would do as you will need it. I have also yowed an Izuzu 2ltr petrol back from london on a short metal bar. The jeep performed very well but towing on such a short bar is not for the faint hearted as it leaves little room for error (this bar was the type sold by machine mart use as a last resort IMO)

If you mean the towed weight should never exceed 100% of the towing vehicle weight I don't think it applies to dual purpose vehicles.

I've towed 3.2 tonne with the grand (legal limit according to the plate) at normal driving speed, and with a well balanced trailer it was fine - that was also with the tow bar being 6 1/2 inches over stock height.

I can imagine that a cherokee with leafs on the back (better for towing IMO) and a more sensible height, then the legal tow limit will be a breze.

Ignore the US tow limits too, find the UK one - the US is litigation mental on towing and have stupidly low tow limits.

http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/jeep.htm

this is a full list of uk towing weights for jeeps, jeep themselves only recommend towing 85% of the max for safety.

The 'Facelift' manual states the following trailer weights,

2.5 Diesel   2500 KG
2.5 Petrol   3150 KG
4.0 Petrol   3250 KG

I would assume that the pre-facelift towing spec's will be the same.
