Well, Asylum has been bitchin about the fuel tank for awhile now :lol:

Offered up the tank and to see what could be done.

Measured and started to box up the tank. 1.8mm sheet steel and 16mm Box were our choice of materials.

Box done.

Tank in and strapped.

Chucked it in the Back, 3 x 10mm bolts hold it down at the front and rear seat belt bolt will secure it down at the rear. The Box has been placed on 5mm rubber matting to lower vibration.

Top offered up to see how its going to look. Self Drill cladding screws will secure to the top eventually.

Fuel lines holes cut and and the pipes are in.

Location plate made up, using the original parts for ease and hopefully looks pretty good.

Soft top side panel trimmed to suit.

Not too bad a location.

Gotta sort out fuel lines, earth strap. Clean up and tart it up a little, will post when completed :drinkers:

how easy is it for soft top removal.

is there a vent in the box for petrol fumes ? mainly due to the fact that when it is under the jeep there is alot of air flow to remove fume seepage

Softtop can be removed, but hasnt been removed since the truck has been owned. TJ's look cool with the soft top down. Personnally, i like something between the back of my head and the next branch thats gonna hit ya :mrgreen:

Venting issue needs to be adressed (not forgotten about) A breather pipe of some description? Thinking of maybe some type of vacuum set-up??

Anyway, whats wrong with a little petrol fumes? Better than what the owner smells like! :lol:

O/S/R Wheel Arch???

I may be talking about something different, but? The Roll over valve/Fuel tank pressure, pipe work heads towards the engine bay and goes into the Evap system?

I thought about this for a while, If I go to a local ish site I only take recovery gear and basic tools etc anyway which there is plaenty of room for and when we go further afield and camp there is that much stuff packed in the truck I can hardly move and it take agees to pack and unpack. Hence the purchase of the Sankey. I was getting fed up of removing everything from the truck to offroad and then taking hours to pack away, with all the tools and spares etc packing became an art form. So once everthing is done The trailer can be packed and pretty much stay packed! And Everything can stay in the trailer with no need to empty on arrival. Set up tent and the truck is already set for offroading with recovery gear and all bits needed.

Only downside, which warthog though of, was if we both tow sankeys and one of us breaks down, do recovery trucks have nato hitches for the trailer?

Must be an age specific thing - just looked at the green TJ 1997MY (old faithful) and that does not have it either - my TJ is 2004MY.

but why didnt you drop it into the floor some to gain alittle bit of the cargo room back. you dont need all that room under the body. lol

I thought the same when I started looking for ideas for my YJ, and as YJs have much 'boxier' inner arches than a TJ, that's the route I'm going. I'm hoping to reuse the factory bash plate too, just a bit of insurance if the prop lets go (been there, done that... :shock:

I thought the same when I started looking for ideas for my YJ, and as YJs have much 'boxier' inner arches than a TJ, that's the route I'm going. I'm hoping to reuse the factory bash plate too, just a bit of insurance if the prop lets go (been there, done that... )

Had a look at it today, asked the question "Why didnt we drop it into the floor" Well.......

On the TJ, you have about 1 1/2" to go untill you are having to relocate Handbrake mounting plate thingy, then exhaust location. Trackbar sits pretty high up too. Pending tnk location, axle and 3rd member/Diff clearance are an issue too.

the fuel tank has it's own vent system through the charcoal filter, but the actual holding tank will need to be vented also to stop any other fumes building up. A series of holes in the base of the container should be ok but of a reasonable size to allow for air flow.

New to this site. I relocated my tank to the rear bed and have always had a faint smell of fuel. I think the fuel pump vents slightly. When I replace my axles I will see if I can put the tank back underneath. Fuel pump whines as well.

The only thing which just doesn’t look right is the filler.

Did you consider positioning the filler in the side of the tub near the Jeep Stuff sticker and use some different hose? If it were possible, I’d guess the filling might be slower, but I think it would look right.

Assuming you leave the filler where it is, then I’d definitely look at rounding off the top corners of the bracket to prevent them from cutting the side window.

Hi Pete,

To honest, the project was mustered up out of what we had at hand. We liked the high position of the filler, as it for sure will keep it out of water (well, unless ya get too adventurous) The fuel filler height at around the "Jeep Stuff" sticker, would make the fuel flow a little to shallow when filling up.

Yep agree the bracket needs some finishing :finga:

Well a coat of paint and all the pipe plumbed in, jobs done. Clayt finished it off while i recovered from a wee "Hangover"

Started up and all o.k, the pump made very little sound after it pressurised. Bit of a drive and very little petrol smell :mrgreen:

Winch bumper back on, but plated the mounts with 5mm plate. Hopefully now the winch bumpers location bolts wont pull through now?

With the added weight of the rear winch bumper and winch I dont think it will be noticed. I still have a few bits to tart up or I will get moaned at by the Hog! I cant smell any petrol at all to be honest and have been for a few drives.
