Now I know absolutly nothing about autos or torque converters, so use layman terms in your replies.
My TH400 on the CJ7 has started screeching. It drove back from CF fine, in fact I ragged her down Shrewsbury bypass out acclerating folk just to see the look on their faces, fun. Parked her up for 2 weeks, got her out washed her, then went for a spin the next day. It's fine when I put it into gear but when I get up to about 25-30 it starts screeching and it sounds just like when your fan belt is slipping.
Have I got water in there? Does it need an oil change? Have I fuked it?
Help.

I had this with an auto box once ...........sounds like the belts slipping, I would change the oil & clean the filter as you may have water in it ......am sure someone will jump on me if I am wrong......

sounds like the torque convertor is slipping, firt thing is swap out the oil, sounds like it could be contaminated

Is the oil in the torque converter the same oil as in the box, ie if I drain the box does it also empty the converter? Can't see a drain plug, looks like I'll have to loosen the cover. Cheers.

you cant drain the converter just drain the box by taking the pan off and change the filter dont wory if the old filter is coated with fur tis nomal big flecks of metal aint good have you made sure the leval is right and does the fluid smell scorched o and when did you last change the fluid o by the way the converter will suck the new fluid up when it is changed

I would imagine that it is rather difficult to check the fluid level when it is in drive :twisted:

Just use KD's bumper as a skid plate and slid along underneath.... I bet heat would take a while to travel through THAT much metal

hope things are moving on with your auto box.some converters did have a drain plug on em,take the inspection cover off underneath and turn the motor by hand and it should come into view if it has one.
If there's a need , I have got a th400 and converter out of a 79 cherokee, and its a gud un ! just let me know.

Thanks for all the replies. Haven't got round to draining the box yet, too fecking busy, hopefully this weekend.
Thanks for the offer Rooter, did you have that on ebay a while back? Seem to remember one on there from Ormskirk. I get up round your area quite frequently, so it may be a possibility, see what I find first.

Update, still haven't got round to this yet. I crawled under a week ago and it still had a good coat of Ribbo mud from CF, so I thinks take it down the yard and wash it off first. Turns key, nothing. Flat battery maybe, fits booster starter thing and nothing. So I'm fed up and lock the garage and go home. :banghead:

This weekend I've taken the starter off (bloody big lump), cleaned it up, stuck some jumper cables on it and it shot across the garage floor. So thats as far as I've got, it's going back on tomorrow night and it'd better start.
All being well I'll clean the gearbox sump and drain the oil this weekend, where's the best place to get a new seal and filter kit for the th400? 4WD maybe or is there somewhere in the UK.

Right getting knarked now, put the starter back on tonight and still nothing, I'm just getting a loud clunk which sounds like the gear thingy coming out of the starter to engage the flywheel, but then it's not turning over. Any suggestions, not good with electrics.

remove the starter cable from the remote selonoid and clean the conectiones it the one on the iner wing with all the wires on it take them all of one at a time and clean them
