TJ Bodywork / Paint
« on: May 04, 2010, 07:27:32 AM »

Over the last couple of months I have noticed what looked at first like little oil stains in the paint on the top of each front wing, same mark on both sides. Will try & take pics later.

Recently this has grown it to small bubbles in the paint, presumably its starting to go rusty from the underneath but I cant see anything bolted to the underside that would be causing it other than crap between the wheelarch liner & the wing.

Also got a few dents on the rear corner courtesy of a post office van a couple of years ago & the paint has now cracked in this area.

Question is before I look to get this nipped in the bud (dont mind the trail rash but want to stop rust  :icon_winkle:) are the TJ panels all steel & are they galvanised ? Want to know so that I can tell any prospective body shop in case this has a bearing on how they treat it.

Cheers Gaz

Yes, they're all steel, yes they're galvanised and no bodyshops won't care, most cars these days are galvanised so they're used to it. All modern processes and materials are specifically designed for it.

Gaz, I have exactly the same thing on one of my wings. There is what looks like a strengthener plate on the underside so I guess water/salt etc has got stuck.
I'm in Worcester too so let me know if you get a good lead on a bodyshop & I'll get mine done too. I'll start to ask about as well.
Pity our TJs aren't the same color!

Cheers Tragic, just the info needed  :icon_winkle:

Thorna, I see a friend most days who works at a body shop in Worcester, am going to ask if she would recommend were she works or another body shop that they deal with as some are funny about cash jobs & just concentrate on insurance stuff.

Whereabouts in the city are you matey, we are on the hospital end of the "Villages" Harley's  :icon_winkle:

Not just yet BD but thanks for the moment, would probably cost me as much in fuel to get to you as it would to get it done locally  :003:

BD if I ever need some bedlining applying I'll let you know; that goes on well with a textured roller.

Gaz,  Its a small world but I didn't realise it was that small; I'm in Lyppard Bourne behind the big Teco; I think I've seen your rig around there a few times. Recommendations would be well received; I'm not as well connected in these parts as I was in the black country.

i have some advice: go to paint shop, look at the protectacote tin, burn image into your mind, run for the hills and avoid burnt in image for the rest of your life, however persuasive Nosebolt seems

now go get yaself some rubberised swimming pool paint (and no, it doesnt only come in lairy blue  :003: )

Well I recently had one of those moblie paint dudes come & checkout the TJ, he was only interested in doing the topside of the wings, ideal if doing a car up to sell but that wasn't the best long term solution.

Took the plung & took it to a local body shop where a friend works & was more satisified that they would treat the cause from the inside of the wing & repint the outside.
Was happy to see that an old Bently was in the workshop to be painted. A local retoration place had done all the major work but weren't happy with the finish so took it there to be done properly  :icon_winkle:

Fingers crossed we will see how its gone at the weekend or Monday ish, no major rush.
