Today i have mostly been........................ crying!

 :010:  :010:

Its not so good, on my usual drive to work this morning, the jeep gave up and stopped, i fear a snapped timing belt!!!!!!! and will spend Sunday removing and inspecting..... i'm led to believe the 2.5CRD doesnt do too much damage? only broken rockers and poss hydraulic tappets? but i have removed the injectors before and replaced the head gasket at great cost to myself (i also replaced the belt around 40'000 miles ago)......  so off with the cam cover, out with the injectors and in with the bore-scope to have a look see!!!!   :banghead:  :jpshakehead:

well,  :010:  stripped down as much as i could today, the belts in tact, just jummped, but one of the idle rollers has collapsed/failed, the outer part has broken up (plastic pulley), but the inner bearing part is fine and all that remains the tensioner, water pump etc seem to be ok, started to remove the rocker cover/cam carrier, but only managed to get out 2 injectors, 2 more than i expected to get out, so gonna try and get a loan of the pulling tool from the stealers, as the after sales manager is an old mate, fingers crossed..... and i.ve e-mailed the company i got the belt kit from via ebay! hopefully the can point me in the right direction of a claim against the manufacturer? i think the roller was not fit for purpose, as i would have expect it to last the reccomended 60'000 manufacturers change interval..??  was done 30/03/09, 11'000 miles ago, its worth a try, gonna take some pics, get an engineers report, and a couple or repair quotes....

progress report: a little bit of positive news, have managed to remove all of the injectors, thanks to a mate at the stealers, lending me the correct tool for the job, even tho the bonnet needed tobe removed and a little bit of the bulkhead had to be ( :headhack: ) moded to get the puller in to the rear injector,  so now we'll see what damage has been done....  :icon_sad:

i,ve had some feed back from the guy,  :banghead: but holding my breath for now till its all done, i,l keep it updated, may be a good part bad part story.. depending on the outcome!!!! i,m in the motor trade myself, spoken to our warranty dept, and a few other people, i have a technicians report and images so far, and have asked mate from stealers to come take a look and write a report too,  but may have to pay for an independant assessment...

i,djust like to get  it stripped, see whats up, get parts sorted and get it back on the road  :steeringwheel:

a mate had her 2.5 snap the belt, it trashed the valves and needed big £ spending on it. Hopefully with just a tooth jump valves & pistons haven't said hello to each other...

update:
well,  its stripped down, valves defo hit the pistons,  :jpshakehead:  :jpshakehead: but the rockers have taken the brunt, they've cracked and broken up, guy from stealers say that they designed to do this, hydraulic tappets look ok, but all the oils been squished out. camshafts fine, a bit light scoring, but is prob normal or 151K.
heads off too, to inspect the valves, even tho stealers said they usualy ok. the exhaust valves looked a little lower than the inlets, cant see any impact marks on the pistons, but valves sit at 90deg to the piston face, might whip em out and check tomor.. think pistons ok, but gonna check height with dial guage to be sure..

gonna list the parts i need,  get sme prices and prob fall over....  :icon_sad:

Rob, slightly unnerving reading all of this.

Bought her indoors a 2002 2.5 CRD three weeks ago with some airmiles....

When does cam belt need to be changed, and how do I find out if (when) this has been done

Thanks.

the 2.5 CRD belt is due every 60'000 miles or reccomended at 5 years
the 2.8 CRD belt is due every 80'000 miles or reccomended at 5 years

the belt kits for both engines are exactly the same, not sure why the change intervals are different? think the 2.5 may have  higher compression?

i've fitted 2 belts to mine, its not a huge job, using the Autodata distructions book, took about 3 hours max. i fitted the first when i bought the jeep, had 70'000 on, wasnt sure of history so just got belt kit from staeler and cracked on, (kit was about £260), second one last year about 11'000 miles ago, got none genuine kit (about £180).

Its reccomended to fit full kit,  Cam belt, 2 idle rollers, tensioner, and a gasket for the timing cover...

I loaned a universal timing pin kit to do mine, prety easy to time up, one hole in crank case, left rear, one hole in each side of cam cover.......

Roger that.....

I'll first try to find out when it's been done.

Service history or some garages write/paint it on the side of the cover

Cheers.
