I'd seen those German clips before, but forgot it were a 6BT in there.

Obviously German garden shed technology is way ahead of America , or maybe it's just that (judging by the size of his front yard), the kraut has a much deeper wallet, and can afford custom built goodies, like a custom radiator.

I've heard of these lumps pushing out massive power/torque figures when tuned right, enough to make a good V8 go limp

I'd seriously consider investing big (by my standards) bucks in building one of these.

I'm just wondering what it weighs and how much the handling will be affected.

much as i admire German engineering FJ dood, are ya serious? A tractor engine in a Chief? Dont ya feel all dirty and soiled for even thinkin it?

save yaself dood, 5 of the CJ prayer and throwin some water over ya head may get ya beck into redemption, then hammer that V8

Just been mooching around on Wikipedia at cummins 6BT and derivatives.

Point taken about the lusty power output of a big V8, which a turbo diesel will never match.

But as for having to wait for a slow noisy slogging old diesel, try 350BHP and 660 ft lb of tourqe

Dunno if the (in)famous italian masterpiece would cope well with two tons of yank iron around it

Its legendary stamina and reliability might suffer under the increased loading

Seriously, if someone threw a CJ at me that had already had a VM dropped in, I would run it.

As long as it was cheap enough to break up and get my cash back when the inevitable occurred

The VM will drag a 2ton XJ around OK - well it does mine.

But got to say don't expect to accelerate up an hill at anything over 70

The XJ is a monocoque unibody SUV and is much lighter than any J series.

Found a curb weight on Wiki of 1523Kg for the XJ whereas my 4 door Cherokee V8 weighs 2010Kg empty on a weighbridge.

Try putting a 500Kg load in your XJ then see how the acceleration is

And that's before adding potential passengers, luggage, trailer etc.

Yes it would pull it, probably about as well as the petrol 4.2 straight six, but not as relaxed to drive.

I said a 2000Kg XJ  - well actually it was 2010Kg last time it was on the weigh bridge

I do know what weight they are standard - but mine ain't standard

Google is good sometimes - but actual experience counts more in my book......

I had the 3.1 Isuzu lump in my Bighorn and it had decent pulling power but not overly quick and still only returned 20mpg,

I then had a rodeo 3litre with prodrive, much quicker diesel engine but only got 17 / 18mpg and even less towing.

Hense buying a V8, thought I may as well have crap mpg and have a V8 sound track
