If...

if it turns out i need to rebuild the rear diff on the eZJ is it just a case of changing the friction plates or will I need to get a full rebuild kit?

also from what i can see, if it is just the plates, then is it just a case of getting the carrier out and fitting the new plates or are there any oddballs to watch out for?

and yes after going around the country lanes today looking at the FSJ I now recon it is the diff going :010: which leads to next question, how long have I got? and what happens if it does fail, is it a lock up or loss of drive?

if the plates are shagged you get a lot off clunking clicking that you can feel through the body of the whole jeep when turnning at very low speeds when diff is good and warm

if its bearings you will get a slight clunk on overun with a pleasant hum under drive the humm will get deeper till it turns to a harsh grinding plus the seal will need a good clubbing due to it pouring the oil out

got the hum but no clunk or oil loss (except from diff cover and that was fixed saturday)

cleaned up real well and the rest is too good, and I like the comfort, recon it'll be worth doing the diff rebuild then will be a keeper for a few years

I drove round in my TJ for about 18mths with shot axle clutch packs; used to make a nasty knock when pulling away when warm; like someone hitting it with a hammer. Then I found a great garage where it got fixed. :icon_super:
