I have a plan, someone talk me out of this.

Get a set of axles & wheels off a diesel WJ (3.91 diffs, varilok LSDs) chop off the spring mounts & fit leaf spring perches on the 44a, get some 265-75-16 tyres, chuck the lot under an XJ with a 4" lift.

Hey presto an XJ running 32's with front and rear LSDs and a decent-ish rear axle with disks for less cash than a straight regear.

What am I missing? seems too easy  :017:

Plus you also get the wj steering and brake conversion

Why not use coils on the back

go jeep did his coil conversion

tempting but adds to the hassle, but would be easy enough to build a subframe that uses the WJ bottom and A arm.......

Sounds like a plan. The only (minor) issues to sort would be:

width, WJ axles are wider so: trackbar and steering draglink would need to be WJ or custom and tyre coverage maybe be an issue??
propshafts, I'm guessing the best plan would be to use XJ ones (adjusted to length) and change the pinion yokes on the WJ axles.
handbrake cables (v.v.vminor) lengths will probably be different.
ABS, easiest to just remove it from the XJ but it would be an interesting project to tackle and write-up it you get the WJ axles working with the XJ ABS controller.

It would be a sweet XJ setup with those axles. I would probably go 3" lift and some minor/clever/hidden trimming if necessary.

been pondering further.

Downside would be low pinion d30 up front. Might need WJ master cylinder for the brakes, not a massive issue, depends on piston ratios.

ABS, IF the sensors have similar tooth count shouldn't be a issue, maybe just changing the WJ sensor plugs ir fitting the XJ sensors to the WJ axles.
Propshafts, would use the XJ ones, front would be a straight swap over using the XJ front yoke, rear prop may need shortening.
Steering would be custom drag link (may get away with modded WJ one) track bar will be a suck it and see with the WJ one, maybe okay with a 3" lift and the slightly longer WJ link.

Getting a more tempting plan...

Well XJ tone rings are 54 tooth, trying to find the tooth count for a WJ. A bit of googling about found a link back to this same subject but I raised it 2 odd years ago  :icon_rolleyes: 3 jeeps later I am thinking about it again  :003:

Hmmmm, thought naively we had ABS on our 98TJ, would this just operate on the Front then, not the back also ???

Later TJs had ABS, Grenville's 2005(?) has ABS and also the 6 speed manual gearbox

If i keep the 6.5 backspace stock WJ wheels this shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Fag packet calculation says a WJ axle with stock 6.5BS wheels & 265 rubber is within 1/2" of the track my old XJ had with the xj axle, 4.5BS wheels & 235 rubber, and they went under the arches nicely

SCRW old chap...why dont you stick some 235 75 R15 MT's on it front rear recovery points etc and actually use it to go laning and PnPs...much less hassle and more fun...

I'd rather spend some cash & look after it, same with the Grand, its worth feck all, but I'll keep it going for a fair few years yet. The bits I'd invest in the XJ would easily transplant into a  new one anyway.

i know it sounded anti xj but it is what i think last year at the break out there was a xj on 35boggers  the best built xj i had seen since mick stansfeilds but it ended up broke due to the whole truck flexing and it started to tear the track bar mount of  it was a shame as it was a well cool truck it was a lot of time skill and cash to be felled by the unibody nature of the beast
