Refurbing a Warn 8274
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:22:44 PM »

Just passed on a working but not mint looking 8274 for not much money off a small recovery wagon.
Its been outside all its life it doesn't look that great; algae would clean off but has anyone refurbed one of these (eg repainted/plated)? Sad I know but my TJ is quite tidy so don't wish to let its appearance slip!
Also do they go on normal Warn style winch plates?

I've always wanted a Warn 'i' winch but as my TJ hasn't been stuck for a few years now have never been able to justify it; 8274 would be overkill!

Cheers IOM: thats ideal. Just need to man up & go back & get it at less than 1/2 the price of a new Chineese winch it would be a cheap way into Warn ownership!

@IOM

you do realise that that winch is NOT a Gigglepin 8 series winch I presume, its not far off what I have, only he has a billet brake assembly, I reckon the cabling is a bit small too. Great winch, not sure about the price.

Yeah he is calling it a "GP spec" as for the cabling I will go welding cable anyhow - the new Gigglepins have the brake in the motors yhay are from David Bowyer - appreciate the heads up though I only paid £2,200gbp plus shipping so it's value at that.

Not sure about the bowmotor 2's having a brake inside them, the GP 84 has an external brake, similar to the 8274.

For Reference I have used 70mm2 cable to and from the winch, and then 50mm2 for the small lengths from the solenoids to the motors, I have also double'd it up so if one albright fails the other will still run both motors, which causes a bit of a pain for fault finding but heh! My cable is double insulated and came from my local Marine Electrician.

£2,200 huh, yes I spose that's not bad, a good indicator if I ever need to sell mine and I have +50% gears

When I have the money I will stick Bowmotor 2's on mine and hopefully one day I will find another 8274 lower casing so I can build up my rear

Use tri-rated cable as its oil resistant and the insulation is made of much tougher stuff than welding cable which is normally rubber based and easily sliced :icon_winkle:

and thats proper advice island of man and not ghay in any way (apart from the rubber based and slicing bit of course)

It's like the motor from the goldfish with the brake in the end I believe all very top secret!!

A new Gigglepin is now approaching £5K with the VAT and as such makes this one look value.

tri rated cable

http://www.eland.co.uk/documents/Tri-rated%20Cables.pdf

check out its current carrying capacities(at full duty) and then realise how big your cables (and batteries) will need to be to run for any period of time :icon_winkle:

If you want some, i can get you it and stick some crimps on if you want, but it will only be available in black at that sort of size!
