Automatic Gearbox Oil
« on: September 13, 2011, 08:30:47 PM »

Hi All

I asked my garage to do a full service on my Jeep including new oil for the Gearbox and Diffs.  Unfortunately I was told I needed to get the gearbox oil directly from Jeep.  So I gave them a call (John Weirs in Perth) and was told, yes sir you need 8 litres and including vat that'll be £118...

Now I count mind spending money on my Jeep but this seems a mite expensive!  Do I have to buy the Mopar Mercon ATF or are there cheaper alternatives?

Doesn't have to be Jeep supplied stuff as far as I know, just get the right grade

If it's a 4.0 XJ you use Dexron II

i am proboably wrong here but i thought that a service on an auto box only needed 4litres of oil not the full 8.7 litres as it is almost impossible to fully drain the torque convertor without a total strip down. or that is what my owners manual says anyway.

I'l need to look into that - 4 litres would be a damn sight more affordable than 8.7!

To clarify...you need to drive it and get the transmission hot, not just start it up to warm up the engine.
