Hi folks.
When I turn right (after turning left) and accelerate I find my power steering stops working. I momentarily turn left a little and then turn right and all is ok.
What do you think the problem is guys?
I am not familiar with the system. Only had the jeep a few days.
Is a valve sticking? Is it a faulty steering box? Faulty pump giving insufficient pressure?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Yes the reservoir level is fine. I am hoping to diagnose either faulty pump or steering box for replacement.

I can see no leaking anywhere either, hence thinking a valve may be sticking due to it being affected during a change in direction an only when turning right after left under acceleration.

Is the pump drive belt tension correct?

I beleive so yeah, IT has recently been serviced and has a new belt. There is no sign of the belt slipping.

Maybe try jacking it up so the front wheels are just off the floor..start the motor, then move your steering wheel lock to lock a dozen or so times and check the res level again..sounds as if you have a bubble in the system. I've come across this before and it costs nothing to try it.

Will give it a go, out or criosity, why jack it up other than making it easier to expel the bubble?

If it had an air bubble in it, would the power steering fail intermittently in either direction? Currently it seems to be when the steering wheel is in the same position turning right aftrer turning left, and worse when accelerating.

TJ steering can put excessive strain on the chassis when static, what we dont want you to do is turn the wheel without being in motion, so jacking up may save a nasty bill. We never know if a member is running large tyres which can compound the strain sometimes.

Do as Bazz says, but when you do turn the wheel, make sure the res cap is off to let the bubble out if there is one. If you still have the problem then my money would be on the Steering box and not the pump as its sort of working anyway. TJ Boxes arnt the strongest design. Expect to get a refurb one for around £280.00 or send your off for a re-build for about £160. there are a few threads telling you about places to take them

Have had this on a TJ, it was the steering box. Bad news is it was too worn to be rebuilt.

Mines done 113k miles, Im thinking mine might be a little long in the tooth too.

I was tempted to look around the local scrapyard for one of a cherokee, they have three there. no wranglers though. That way I can coontinue to drive the jeep while the cherokee one is refurbished.

my Jeep is a 97, could osmeone please tell me what years and what vehicles I can use a doner?

Just this second been informed by a collegue they have just come in from the carpark and after admiring the jeep, seen a large wood-screw in one of my tyres too. Bugger!

Thanks CB..I should have clarified that for him. I'm a great believer in trying all the easy, free stuff first instead of just assuming 'houston, we have a problem' route and start counting the notes in the wallet.

I don't mind where it comes from. Are US ones different to Uk ones? Will it work as it might be cheaper to get a recon one from the states.
I'm in Florida on holiday in two weeks, (honeymoon) if the misses doesn't mind I could pick one up.

RHD boxes in the US are rare so get one from the UK and if it goes wrong at least you'll be local
